View Full Version : Xmods anyone?

Hopefully at the end of this month a few of us are going to run our xmods in a little 1/8th mile battle anyone interested in joining? Â*Its $5 per car to enter winner take all pot :) few rules apply:
1. basically unmodified stock or aftermarket body kit
2. stock Battery setup any 4 AAA batterys allowed
3. Any available Stage 1 or 2 motor through radio shack
4. Stock Chassis
im bored this winter with the gtp so had to pick up on another hobby in the meantime  anyone else got one and would like to have some fun?

sorry stock body kit...meaning you can swap any applicible kit onto your car...like mine has parts of the aftermarket kit on it but unmodified meaning no parts can be cut off to lighten it like i was going to cut off the tailpipes but leave the rest alone(cant do that) were also thinking about changing that battery rule for next month...just an expensive upgrade for what would amount for a $15-$20 pot this month :) if we could get 4-5 more peeps interested and make it a decent sized pot thats a different story but this month thats the way were gonna set it up.

tranny shmany I need to swap my motor to my truck, tim needs to swap his motor to his car, justin needs to get his car on the road...we all have issues but still have found the few dollars to spend on an xmod...better hope your birthday is this month so you can get one :) the mods for them is nearly as endless as a real car with carbon fiber abound as well as tons of power mods and awd and such, not to mention a wide array of tires from plastic to billet and tires gallor :)

side note. teh nody rule should be read as "stock" body. you are allowed to do whatever you want under the body. but from the outside the body will have to look stock or like it jsut had body kit parts swapped onto it. :D
the battey/chassis/and motor things are just to keep costs under control for this first race. we will prolly eliminate one or more of the rules for next time. i know the battery/electronics rules will fall first since at least justin adn i are both dying to put some real power into our cars.

It's a cool forum run by the owner of www.atomicmods.com a great site for aftermarket parts.
I can't wait to start really tearing into this thing with power. Tim is the weight nazi, but Bill's body is lighter to start with, and I have a few tricks up my sleeve

::edit:: - when we say stock batteries, that means basically any 4 AAA alkaline or Ni-Mhi mounted in the stock location....

I don't want one because I've already got too much on my plate as it is.... BUT.... I'll help somebody win if they give me 25% of the pot. Remember, I don't collect until I win.... any takers? You'll have a young espiring Smokey Yunik on your hands if you do. I've already got some ideas that will DEFINATLY help and bet nobody has thought of. Not even the forums have anything about my ideas.
Just to make sure I'm on the same plane, this is strickly drag racing right?

you can find xmods starter kits fairly cheap and with a good set of batteries and a good stage 2 motor you should be competitive in this first race. Personally ive already put about $150 into it so i better damn well be competetive

I've got a rather LARGE motor, 1/10th scale electronics ESC, etc.... maybe it'll fit, lol.
I think the best upgrade would be a HUGE motor and electronics. Weight reduction is nice but might hurt you if you've got too much horsepower. Unless you microwave your tires the weight reduction might end up leaving you spinning.
I'd like one to put in a mini-jet engine in  .

batteries seem to be one of thee best mods...alk. batts suck...lithium AAA's are better...tim was telling me theres a double a conversion that works well and then theres a rechargable lith-ion batterys which are light and powerful. I would like to see a stage 1 turd motor with the lith ion's vs a lithium AAA stage 2 setup...i think the stage 2 motor would loose to be honest.

I'm looking into building a miniture drag strip that uses a standard laptop. The tricky part is going to be having multiple inputs. 2 cars and a start/finish beam = 4 inputs. The software I can write in an evening, the hardware on the other hand.... I'm thinking about infrared, it's the cheapest circuit. Now how to bring it into the computer is the hard part.

Sounds like an interesting project. A circuit that starts timing when the green light goes for both cars. Have it hooked up to a timer and a 7-segment display, displaying elapsed time for both cars, then when the car triggers the infrared beam at the finish, have it turn the timer off, and would subsequently display the ET on the display. Laptop interface might be to hard to implement, but im sure there's always a way. Either way, thats a pretty decent size project.

That's why I want to use a laptop. I can program in the lights EASY and the timing can be done, recorded, etc. It just makes things so much easier when you have the tree displayed on the laptop screen. I can also easily interface external LEDs through the parallel port.
The only thing I need to do is get an EE to design the ir beam circuitry and help me decide how to run the a/d into the laptop. From there I can control it. I don't care HOW the signal gets into the computer, I just need it to get in, lol.
I'm not good at designing circuits so I'm limited to whatever is on the net. If an EE could design an IR beam break circuit to a digital signal I could do the rest of the interfacing. Leave the programming up to me.

4 different pinions i believe...makes thing easier if you find one to be better suited...even if you only wanted 2 of the pinions...your way would probably cost 20ish for 2...buying 4 from radioshack would only cost 15 and youd have 2 extra if one of the others burned out.

They need to make CF chassis, suspension parts, bodyshell, and flextures to replace the springs. Those things could be SO light if I got a hold of one. Since a CF chassis would be crazy you could make one out of natures composite... wood. Balsa wood has been used in model aircrafts for weight and strength for years. Even the corvettes use Balsa wood in their construction  .
A trick to lightening the plastic is to use a hotwire. A soldering iron with a paperclip in the end works well. A hotwire is a lot easier to control than a dremel.

I was using an unmodified stock body kit.... only the windows are down... Nobody ever said the windows had to be up ;) . You need to make a new rule.

Hey if you've got the money to blow on it like that go for it. But don't be shocked when guys with half as much invested start winning. I could see Prevo building the fastest car for under $200

why? because our 1:28 scale cars powered by 4 AAA batteries are currently faster then your 1:1 scale Camaro powered by a sb v8?

looks like i won't be able to host anything here for a while. the "minor" rearrangement of teh basement has turned into a full blown refinishing job. i get to build walls, install a door, run electric......
no way it will be done in time or even have a large enough space clear to run.
sorry
later

I might be in if we find another place. My lithiums still haven't shown up so I'd still be legal for this month. Although I've been making custom body mods that are adding weight instead of reducing it....that can't be good for business. Also with my AWD and only the stock 4AAA's that will hurt my performance as well.

Tony if you have a big enough space inside it's fun. I took mine out on my driveway last week and the asphalt is way too bumpy for these things. They are too small to handle much more than a smooth surface. Low shag carpet isn't bad either.

too bad my basement is sooo torn up. the painted concrete hooks great nad there are just enough bumps to keep the driver honest :)

I got my parts from Atomicmods today! CF driveshaft, new slicks, wide bearings, wheel shims, and a new front axle.
Gotta work on the computer before the Xmod though :(

My Lithium Pro-Kit finally showed up yesterday. Got the car apart last night when I got home from work at 9:15 (damn 13 hour days). I'm hoping to drill the chassis over lunch and do the electronics work on it tonight.
Next on the list: Bearings, wheel spacers, tight turns mod.

I'm trying to figure out exactly how to do the tight turns mod....I have the resistors, but they are smaller than his pictures made them seem to be. Gonna have to find a soldering iron with a very fine point.

Did you order the kit from atomicmods or did you just pick up resistors from your local electronics store? I'm thinking resistors from the local store will be easier to install. I could care less if they look a little more crowded in there. It's all contained under the body anyway.

I paid the couple of bucks to get them from atomicmods because I couldn't make out from his pics or find elsewhere what resistors to use. I may just attach them to short lengths of wire and then solder the wire to the board.

Yeah those suckers are tiny. I'm gonna use regular resistors and just splice them into the wires that go directly into the servo. I also want to tighten up my tie rods but don't want to buy billet pieces. I think I'm going to try slipping wire insulation them to take up the slop.

your **** should really fly with those lith ion batteries...what motor are you running? What body do you have? Did you get the quick kit or the std kit? i cant imagine how fast it w ould be in comparison right now i can flip mine on a quick turn i cant imagine what you could do going ~10+ mph faster lol

I have the 9 tooth S2 motor in it right now. I'm running the 67 Camaro body with the body kit add ons, a custom made front spoiler with fog lights, and the LED kit. I made the spoiler and fogs because I knew I wanted the LED's, but I also like the Ralley Sport front clip with the hide aways.
I haven't had my car running on a big enough flat floor yet to really see how fast it was on stock batteries. I'm looking forward to gettin the Lithium's in tonight and taking it to my girlfriends dorm this weekend. There are some nice long hallways for testing top speed.

i have industrial type carpet at my house which is pretty fast to race on...i cant imagine running on lenolium or something like that even with the stock batteries and the s2 motor i have in there now it would be nearly too fast to control...have fun trying to control that hehe
