Looking through year one, I found they sell cams in a "K" kit. Complete kit which includes camshaft, lifters, matched valve springs, retainers, locks, seals, timing chain set, assembly lube, decals, and instructions. Looking at the Comp Cams Dual Energy kit. Its a Hyd flat tappet. RPM range 2000-6000. Adv dur int/exh 275/277. Dur .050 int/exh 219/229. Lift int/exh w/1.5 .462/.482 for $329. They say "High performance street, works with stock converter, choppy idle.

Not bad for $329 considering what you get.

Comp kits from Jegs.com are more in the $300 range, so you could save yourself a few bucks by getting away from year one.

Your '88 305 is a roller motor, not flat tappet.....

it is roller lifter. with roller lifterrs there is no ned for the K-kit. you can reuse your stock lifters as long as they aren't damaged because they don't "wear in to the cam" like flat tappet lifters do. just get a cam and a new timing chain.
LT1 cams are a good, low cost upgrade as deadtrend mentioned.
if you want a new cam, look at comp cams extreme energy line. they have much better lobe technology than the dual energy's have, so more power for teh same amount of work :)
