Well, summer is comming up and that means that hopefully a 454 (or 396) will be going in the Iroc. I doubt the 700R4 tranny can hold them so whats a good alternative? I still want to be able to use this on the street and have it be (if needed) an auto.

700r4 can hold big blocks, allstar transmissions up north has built thenm to hold 800 hp, but if you'd feel safer throw a th400 back there

You'd spend several thousand on a 700R4 that *might* hold up to the power, or you spend a few hundred on a rebuilt TH400 that will take whatever you throw at it ...you make the choice ;)

Ive heard that the T56 tranny works really good. Now granted its a stick, it seems like a viable option (considering I go to a junkyard and pay 500-1200 depending on what it comes with and cond.)

There are a few ways to go.
A built 700R4 will cost you a small fortune, but allows you to have an overdrive gear.
A TH400 can easily handle the power for <$1000 but if you have a big gear in the car, you'll lose highway drivability. I have a TH400, high stall TC and 4.11 rear and I won't take it over 60 mph for more than a couple of miles.
My solution now is going to be putting in a Currie 9" rear with 3.70 gear and running tall tires on the street. That should ease my car's screaming on the highway. If not, I'll look into a Gear Vendor's overdrive unit. They're sweet, but cost ~$2k.
