matt, yes its possible to make anything into a convertible, but that doesnt mean itll be cheap or safe. In regards to a 3rd gen, just buy a 'vert, they are out there, trying to make one would cost 2-3 times of buying one.
ive seen people cut back halfs of 3rd gen verts and weld them to front half of ttop car. that is STUPID and dangerous.

WayFast84 04-09-2006 10:21 AM

Is it possible to make A removable top? sorta like supras have? Id like that much better then t tops!

Tsar 04-09-2006 10:28 AM

um..targa top, sure take your sawzall out and you're good to go...justdont forget to reinforce the frame

Brando56894 04-09-2006 11:25 AM

isnt that what the "T" in ttops actually stands for?

t top and targa top are different. in t top there's that middle section, in targa top there's nothing... quick google gave me this pic

84-up vettes have a "targa" top(other than verts and 99+hardtops)
T in ttops i actually believe originally stood for T-roof, describing the shape of the roof with the panels removed. I belive the first GM ttop design came out in 1968.

its still not worth it. On ttop models that center bar is a huge structual component, if you cut it out, the car will come together at the top about 3" and the doors wont close. to reinforce it is more work than is reasonable. a hardtop 3rd gen doesnt even have that center bar. so to make a targa top youd have to reinfroce the chassis quite a bit, and then welld a sub-structure under the roof piece to support the sheet metal roof which is very flimsy once cut away. then you need to fabricate latches and weatherstripping rails. so all in all, its not worth it. If you want a targa that bad, buy a 'vert, weld one new full 1/4 panels, add a rear rood section and a hatch and then make a top for it.

i could of swore i saw somewhere (owners manual?) that the t stood for targa, oh well doesnt matter...

V 04-09-2006 02:29 PM

maybe over the years they adopted new meanings, lol

oh one ls1 SS 04-09-2006 02:30 PM

yea i got them from transam4life (alex) he got me 2 plates for an LS1, the intake one seals fine, but the exhaust one keeps squealing. this is the second time resealing it. if it doesnt work this time im gonna try it once more but not touch it for 24 hours. cuz the first time right after i put it on kasey to me to turn it on and i think that broke the seal and this time i hard to turn the car on (about 30-60 mins after i initially put it on, so it should of set somewhat) to move it up like a foot or two. after that i proceeded to cover the sides of the plate with rtv just to make sure. havent touched it since then and that was prolly about an hour or two ago. it says it cures in 24 hours...

V 04-09-2006 04:01 PM

hmm.. i dunno what to do today.. i have so much i should do.. but thats why i wont do anything..

project89 04-09-2006 04:03 PM

low 14,s w/stick street tires
other then that id have to find the slips for it
i didnt build it to be a race motor, it was built as a nice lil street motor nice low end tq

WayFast84 04-09-2006 04:07 PM

is it tpi that ur runin now? what internals? how many miles?

project89 04-09-2006 04:13 PM

nope 4bl i forgot were i got the crank from, but it has speed pro pistions, stock recon rods stock cam 9.5-1 comp redlines at 5,500 just over 40,000 miles
the motor will live forever if u take care of it dont over rev it,or beat the living piss out of it
actually if u over rev it ull destroy the valves it will float the valves above 5,500

WayFast84 04-09-2006 04:26 PM

ill think about it, most likely I have to return everything here and then get new wheels first. But another factor is installing the motor.
