pretty interesting write up of how running without an air cleaner can actually lose HP compared to using the right combination of parts. Bottom line, use the tallest air filter you can find with the flattest base. this will help direct air into the carb without a whole lot of turbulence.

"Our test big-block actually recorded slightly rich air-fuel ratio mixtures at peak power with just the bare carburetor. Once we added the Flow Control and other air cleaner assemblies, the additional airflow slightly leaned the air-fuel ratio by roughly a quarter of a ratio. That basically tells me they are selling out to K&N. ****ers didn't even tune the no-air cleaner assembly. Instead, they said the just carb setup was richer than the other tests that they tuned properly using the correct jets to make peak power, lol, what a sell out. I'd like to piss in their gas tanks for insulting my intelligence and clouding the whole issue of running an air cleaner. The only good thing is that they did post that disclaimer for guys like me to prevent the majority from going and buying a K&N.

Running an open carb is obviously a bad idea but it's an old school look. It says, "This engine eat's small children and pets when you're not looking." Again, not a street car but man is it cool to see it on the street from time to time. Let's hope the ricers think it's cool and destroy their engines in the process. Remember, making 400hp with a big v8 and some dust doesn't do NEARLY as much damage as a 400hp small cubes inline 4 or turbo :) .

p.s.- The fastest turbo cars don't run air cleaners, explain that. :P

the fastest turbo cars aren't street cars :wink: race tracks are pretty clean.

You got me there :lol: . But you're assuming Koll's ride will be a street car. As of right now isn't it doing a lot of sitting around like my poor camaro?

I've seen cars run faster with air cleaners than without. An carb without an air cleaner can get a lot of turbulance around it. If your car runs worse with one installed its because its either too small or old and dirty ...Theres really NO reason not to run one
