the barter system. i'll help with your headers if you show me how to do mine. it's the very basics of the automotive mechanic's community, before they started learning how to charge $65 an hour to change your spark plugs and rotate your tires.

WayFast84 12-16-2005 02:42 PM

damn If I charged my self 65 an hour to do my own spark plugs id have like $250 ( yeh Im slow)

Yeah, ill make it quick..

Open hood
Unbolt exhaust manifolds from y pipe
Unbolt exhaust manifolds from cyl heads
Bolt up new headers to cyl heads
start car
Listen to bad ass engine
have neighbors, parents, and/or cops tell you to turn it off
turn off car
Wait 20 mins
Turn it back on again
have neighbors, parents, and/or cops tell you not to do that again
turn it off
Connect y pipe to headers
Start engine again real quick
turn off before you get in trouble
attach y pipe to rest of exhaust

ok? Now, my 72 should he a cake walk with 100x more room then a third gen.

WayFast84 12-17-2005 08:51 AM

you make it sound so easy! I wish it were that easy! I mean I must have spent an hour under the hood of my car and I just ended stipping bolts on my air tube...

it will be MUCH easier! When I did the headers in my second gen, the driver side dropped right in from the top. For the passenger side one I had to take the starter out and it dropped in from the top as well. I also had to deal with the huge AC/HVAC housing, but suprisingly it didnt get in my way.

Best way to learn is to just do it. Ask questions when you get stuck. I've learned everything about working on cars/trucks/boats by just doing it myself. If you want to learn how to rebuild an engine, trans or rear, then that gets more involved and takes some specialized tools to make sure you do it right(if it's high performance). Heck, I could've used ya last night to finish hacksawing the intermediate pipe on my SS. The Sawzall could only get 3/4 of the way through because of the tunnel so I had to finish sawing it by holding the blade in my hand! It took about 2 hours when it should have taken minutes. But as you've already learned, things don't always go the way you hope they do.

was there a reason why you couldn't hack the pipe enough to make room for the saw? damn, that's nuts. i surely would've resorted to some other cutting means besides holding a blade in my hand for two hours. a ferd wrench and a screwdriver, or something. then again, i am not known for being very patient...

Yes, as long as the starter is out of the way, headers are very easy on that car. My headers were pretty easy to drop in from the top, but that was in a 3rd gen with practically nothing but the motor in the engine bay.

Psssh...already been there. I did headers on my 87, I know how bad it is, and I have the scars to prove it.
