if i read it right freeBSD is unix not linux right?

Tru2Chevy 03-30-2006 01:58 PM

Yea, it's based on the BSD Unix developed at Berkeley.

Brando56894 03-30-2006 02:01 PM

hmmm, never tried "pure" unix before..... it says it runs programs built for linux, so thats a plus. as long as all the commands and everything are the same i should be good...

Tru2Chevy 03-30-2006 02:04 PM

Yea, there are some differences, but that's just like the differences between all the different flavors of *nix.

Most software built for Linux is *nix compatible, but there will always be a few that stand out.

I say you try it and see how you like it.

at the bottom of the page theres on of those test things and this one is "what is your souls trait?" if kasey did it it would prolly say "you are a fidget, you have no soul. go away!"

Brando56894 03-30-2006 02:23 PM

wow he has some old ass computers... the SPARC is only 40mhz!

edit: christ its taking forever and a day to download freebsd!

Brando56894 04-01-2006 01:11 AM

finally downloaded it but this motherboard is a total POS, its so hard to boot from a cd compared to my Asus boards, plus ive had errors with alot of the installs

JW 04-01-2006 01:15 AM

i'm so glad i got your ASUS ;-)

Brando56894 04-01-2006 02:21 AM

yea they make great Mobos but theyre (recent) customer service sucks ass, i gotta send them the bios chip for my p4c800-e so i can take this POS out and sell it. you want another one billy? :D

and to JW, the only knoppix ive ever really used was Knoppix STD (security tools distro) and i thought that was good, today i just tried PHLAK (pro. hackers linux assult kit) and its about 20x better then Knoppix STD. its based off of a debian live distro, idk what its called though

Brando56894 04-20-2006 06:51 PM

it seems FreeBSD doesnt like USB keyboards. i told it to load with the usb drivers and it didnt work so i figured it was this stupid mobo, then i went home and tried it and the same thing happened :(

thanks bro, but i dont think i can edit the kernel args cuz this happens even before anything is even installed (the keyboard doesnt work on the second color screen that pops up)

GrandmasterCow 04-22-2006 10:25 AM

Use Fedora Core 4, it used to be the free Red Hat distrobution. Mandrake is good also to give it a shot. ive worked with many of these linux distros for about 8 or 9 years so far.

Brando56894 04-22-2006 03:53 PM

i guess i cant try fedora again, i used core 3 and wasnt that impressed....

I guess they count on you having access to a ps/2 for setup purposes....

- Justin

Brando56894 04-23-2006 05:57 PM

guess so, even though the no. 7 option on the screen says something that amounts to "use USB keyboard" and it recognizes it but it wont work  i had half of FC5 downloaded (the dvd) then the stupid internet here decided to kick me off and make me reauthenticate  so i just decided to download the dapper drake beta (kubuntu 6.06) and see if it will run any better then what i have on here now idk if its the distro screwin up or the mobo bein ******...

Tru2Chevy 04-25-2006 03:43 PM

I think I'm gonna fire up my old box tonight and get some Ubuntu action going on. I've been without *nix for too long....
