Yes. Maybe in my case I have to renew it only once more before my sticker expires in October so I have a current voucher when I go to the inspection station? You would think the MVC and inspection stations would be on the same page...but clearly they are not.

What I meant is that the voucher is good for 3 months, and it is within that 3 months that you can go to inspection. If 3 months pass and you haven't gone you have to get a new voucher to go. You don't need a voucher to drive the car- only when you want to go to inspection.

That would seem to make the most sense.

I just took care of my SS today

I went into the local DMV, and told them i need the application for collector car status. I got it, filled it out. Handed it back in and showed my current registration, and paid my $25. I then got back what "looks" to be a registration card, but on the card it says "COLLECTOR VEHICLE VOUCHER" and the expiration date is in 3 months. SO i just asked to make sure what that means..
It means you need to bring the car to a state inspection place WITHIN 3 months, and after that the "voucher" is no longer valid (and you have to reapply, another $25, etc)
You do not get a new registration card, nor are there any real changes to your registration, you just get that voucher.

I then saw that my local inspection station was open to 7pm tonight, so i got my reg and insurance cards for the SS together, along with the reg and ins cards from my Denali to show i have a daily driver. I even printed out my insurance declaration sheet to show that the SS is listed as "Pleasure Use" only. Turns out all my vehicles are listed as pleasure use, since i dont commute or drive to work/school, lol.

Anyways, i got to the Inspection station, sat in line for like 20min, till i finally got up to the guy directing cars to different lanes. He gave me a VERY strange look, i guess he found it odd i was actually trying for inspection. he first pointed me to a line and then i told him "collector vehicle inspection". He looked relieved, and then told me to leave that line and go around the left side of the building and go under the side awning/roof. (this is paramus inspection station in bergen co) I pulled up, and a worker came out, i handed him my voucher, registration, insurance card(only for the SS) and my drivers license. He looked the papers over quick, and then wrote down my VIN, current mileage, and that it was a 5.7 V8. That was because they had to enter it in the state computer because my car is not in the system.(never inspected since new, and they dont plug into my OBDII to pull the info). He then went inside for like 5 min, came back out with the scraper, took my dealer inspection sticker and my 2 year extension sticker off, and put on the new triangle sticker. I gotta clean some glue off more, but it was a pain to begin with for him to reach it on these deep dashboards, plus my huge tach is right there as well.

so anyways, tehcincally i'm all legal now.

I have state farm insurance and I pay about 150/month for my insurance with healthy figures for liability and collision. I'ma also 23 and no accidents. My insurance just went down to a tad over 200 for both my cars combined so not bad in my book.

your insurance; how is that set up? Like; did u insure the car for a "stated value" (the amnount of money u invested into it), and if something were to happen u get that stated amount back?

and you're also limited to 3K miles a yr right? whcih i guess isn't bad b/c that = about the amount of good weather / non work related spring / summer driving i'd be using the car for anyways...

Thanks for the info. That makes sense. I guess then I'll just take mine this month for inspection, so I don't have to bother renewing the voucher again.

EDIT: I believe the first time you apply for a collector's voucher is $25. Each time thereafter that you renew it, it's $10, because the initial should already be in the system.

What happens if you go over 3,000 miles?

I think they make you get in line for regular inspection.

88Z-Man 07-11-2007 04:06 PM

I was told you need to get the car appraised before you could get the collector car stuff. Did you need to do that also? If so who did you use. My insurance company also said I needed to appraise the car before they would insure it as a collector car.

That woud be insurance company dependent. I did not have to for my agreed value policy with hagerty.

V 07-11-2007 05:25 PM

88z-man, i was the guy sitting next to you inside at the chatterbox meet, The state really does not care how you have it insured. In my case, all they did was LOOK at my regular insurance card and hand it back to me, Its not a collector car policy. They didnt even ask to see the declaration sheet listing it as pleasure use. Nor did the ask to see any proof i have another vehcile registered and insured as use as a daily driver.

IF you WANT collector car insurance, then yes, you may need it appraised, thats basically for most "agreed" value policies. In those cases they wanna see a reason for "X amount of dollars" in coverage desired. Once i actually get collector insurance for my SS, iroc, and 79 vette, all will have agreed values, the iroc will be 10k, vette will be 20k, and the SS around 45K, i have all receipts and doc.'s top support those value.

BonzoHansen 07-11-2007 05:26 PM

Hagerty gave me $20k agreed value with just pics & a description. "Is that all you want" was the reply. Seems fair & didn't want the premium any higher.

V 07-11-2007 05:30 PM

i have over 70k into my SS.... sad huh? lmao, buying a car brand new always hurts....

BonzoHansen 07-11-2007 05:31 PM

Damn.

ok, well that answered one of my questions, now i have a couple others:

1) what are the restrictions on driving OTHER then being limited to 3K miles a yr and having another car as your DD? Like can you still take it to the track and race it, if i decide to take a cruise to the shore and get slammed into, will they ring my balls when i try to make a claim?

2) whats is a "normal" premium, like how much is the premium on your $20k coverage (if you dont mind me asking)?

3) does anyone kno what happens if you DO go over the 3k milage limit? Now i don't mean 2k miles over, more like a couple hundred. Does NJ "ream" you?

If i keep going the way i am (and i kno i will be), i NEED this kind of coverage. I dont want a repeat of my GTA incident (10% coverage in parts won't cover it this time). My car is over 5 yrs old, so that mean it is worth "diddly-d*ck" to the ins company in regards to "standard coverage". and i really can't see me driving more then 3k miles a yr if i have something else to drive and only drive my car the way i want to. might as well get the collector regs and not have to deal with inspection.

LS1Hawk 07-12-2007 11:17 AM

I have Grundy insurance right now, and they specifically state in their policy that the car cannot be used for racing. They also don't allow you to use it to run errands, where it will have to be parked in a parking lot, or take it to work. They're not going to know if you do all this, but if the car is damaged at the track or stolen from a mall, you're not covered. I would assume most other collector insurance companies would be the same.

They do allow "pleasure" driving, which means driving the car for leisure, taking it to car shows. Grundy doesn't have a mileage limit. However, if you have NJ collector's registration, than you're limited to 3,000 miles regardless.

NightRydaSS 07-12-2007 11:21 AM

does anyone else have experience with any other companies?

88Z-Man 07-12-2007 11:23 AM

SmokinSS---

Whats up dude?
DMV also told me about appraising when I called to get the info. I'll probablely get it before summer is over and just use the appraisal info if asked for.

i don't think regular insurance "covers" you if you're racing at a track either. They migth "have to" if you're still financing it, but if it is paid off for some reason i don't think they would do it. correct me if im wrong tho...

That is fine; not to sound cocky but it isn't my driving im worried about. Not sayin im the worlds greatest driver, but it is the idiot that drops his cig in his lap while driving a 74 buick with 4 different shades of rust that slams into the back of me that i am worried about. I justify this way of thinking by sayin to myself; if ***** happens i have olny myself to blame. u kno?

if anyone else has any experience with any other companies that offer "agreed value" please let me kno what the restrictions are

1) Hagerty has no spelled out restriction in their policy but racing. Racing is not covered. If you crack the car up on the way to the track, it is covered. If you do it on the track, it is not. It doesn’t mean you can’t do it, it means you are not covered financially. Your regular coverage does not cover racing either. A recent endorsement (a contractual change) to their policy clearly defines that. I have read the entire policy a number of times, no other limitations.
2) My current rate is ~$300 per year. No deductibles, increased limits of liability to match the higher rates on my DD policy. They did bump me up to the modified class which raised my premium about 35%. But I wanted to be honest about what was in the car so they cover it. Also, technically an insurance company can deny a claim if you are not truthful or withhold information they asked for in the application/renewal process.
3) I have no idea, sorry.

For Hagerty, I had to show proof of an insured daily driver for each licensed driver in the house. I had to be at least 25, and I had to have no points (maybe no more then 2, don’t remember). They may have car age limits. They wouldn’t write the 99Z28 I have. Too new.

Other companies will of course differ.

One other thing to note- some collector's insurance companies require the car to be garaged when you are not driving it.

BonzoHansen 07-12-2007 01:38 PM

Correct, I forgot that. That might be in the policy too.

NightRydaSS 07-12-2007 02:22 PM

hmm, regular insurance doesn't cover racing either, that is what i thought. So that means that those ppl that race their brand new $90K ZO6 that they might be financing are NOT financially covered for the car if they hit the wall? that sucks. But you can't blame the ins company for that.

anyways, i kno AllState has a policy also, i asked them last yr but they denied me b/c my SS is still my DD.

as far as the garage thing goes; how will they know if you don't have it in one? i mean unless a tree falls on your car or something like that.

basically i just want to make sure that the INS companies don't restrict the use of the car so much i can hardly drive it. 3K miles a yr limit isn't bad b/c i prob wouldnt go past that anyways if i drive the car like how i want to (good weather, spring summer, no work, weekend cruiser, ect).

the biggest thing im looking at is if i "invest" $20K in my car and something happens to it, i can get it back (as long as i follow the rules of the policy). I don't get an "i'm sorry for your loss Sr, here is your check for the value of your car...($6)" That is what happened to my GTA, my dad and i got reamed b/c it was 14 yrs old and to the INS company worth d*ck. even tho the car was show room condt, 81K origional miles, w/ about $3K worth of upgrades in it.

id still like to kno what happens if you go over your milage limit in NJ

No, you won't get anything for money you put into the car. If you get an agreed value policy they will pay out that amount, otherwise they will pay out like it's stock.

Remember what I said, they can deny a claim based on false information. And if you lie on an app, that is technically insurance fraud, which is now falls under the criminal statutes in NJ. Fraud is one of the big things that drives up our premiums.

These type of companies get very few claims, so I am confident they properly investigate all claims. If you have a claim for an event at the place you claim to garage it and they see no garage, good luck.
