However, the question in the OP's post says "select your geographic location of origin," and I was born here in the United States. I'm an American; not Native American, Irish, German, or anything else. I really wish more people would accept and state that.

Fine. How about "If you trace your heritage as far back as it will go, what countries are your ancestors from?"

LOL that doesn't make it much easier... I've traced a lot of my family history. Somewhere down the line, a part of my family moved from Ireland to England, and their children moved to America. Does that make me British or Irish? Another part of family came here from Poland, but it was a part of Russia at that time. Am I Polish or Russian? Where did their ancestors come from? You see what I'm saying?

Sorry to come off as pretentious... just venting some thoughts, I guess.

No big deal. I have trouble myself...

I'm positive that my grandfather (dad's side) was 100% German since we have paperwork from Bavaria. My mom was born in Austria to my "Hungarian" grandma and grandpa, who were born during the Austrio-Hungarian Empire so we don't know if they are really Hungarian or Austrian. Combine that with my dad's mom, whose parents were from Poland or from Austria depending on when in history you look at a map. Lots of border changes in the 20th century.

So I just roll with it and say I'm 25% German, 50% Austrian, and 25% Polish. Best guess at least.

Don't take this the wrong way

I always thought that it was funny when Ukrainians introduce themselves as Russians to other people; however, when surrounded by Ukrainians and if they are referred to as "Russian" aka "Moskal'" they get offended. I never understand why, but I do find it humorous

Italian/Hungarian. My grandparents all came to America in the 30s and 40s.

Anyone have an interesting family tree? The Hungarian side of my family has keep it documented for hunderds of years, as far back that Genghis Khan is listed as my ansestor.

We tried doing one for the Italian side, buy too many records are missing/lost during the war, we could only go back about 6-7 generations.

My father and grandfather did the tree tracing thing -many- years ago, going back to the late 1600's. Apparently one of my Norwegian ancestors was pressed into British Naval service way back when, then jumped ship when they sailed into Boston pre-revolution. That's how my father's side of the family got to America.

I also went to Ellis Island a few years back and typed in my last name on the computer, and saw all the (legal) immigration that happened from Norway, some of whom I might be related to.
