go into your bios and if you can see it in there you should have the option of formatting it.\
or try this with the hard drive connected.
right click my computer go to manage select disk management that should display the hard drives you have and if the computer is detecting the hard drive it should be listed as a separate drive showing the new space as unallocated space then just right click and select new partition and follow on screen directions if it is not listed there then windows is not detecting the drive and you might have to try formatting it as a slave drive through another computer using a xp install disc if that doesn't work it might be a bad drive

thank you!!!!!!! i have vista so its slightly different but i gathered enough context clues to figure it out from what you said. thanks again man. i really wanted to back up all my application material ASAP. its formatting now. its gonna take a while, 3% in 15 minutes...
