yeah i saw this on the front side of the paper. i have about 6 stands and 2 jacks in my house...usually while up on stands ill keep the jack still kinda extended in case. i learned my lesson a few months ago when i bought a blackjack low profile jack, i was under the car to measure and see what kind of u joint i had, with no stands under the car just the jack under the rear. long story short the jack starter to slowly let out....really slow but still. scary enough.

i usually have my jackstands under the car, and leave the floor jack up with a little weight on it just for added "oh ****" insurance.

I do that as well.

In the photo there is a hi-lift jack on the side of the Jeep.....I sure hope that's not what he was using, but it looks like it was. Those things are great out on the trail, but using one in place of a floor jack is like playing catch with lawn darts while drinking.

I feel bad for his family though.

i noticed that too but it said that the wheel was off and that one was on...i think the actual accident happened on the other side and that one is the firemans jack???

why the f@uck is he using a bumper jack to lift the car, I gurantee he is no mechanic at all just a know it all that thought he could work on his car.
Some of you on here better pay attention to this......

LTb1ow 10-03-2009 07:24 PM

Orly?

Does that mean patio bricks are a bad jack stand?

I was on my phone at the time and didn't read past the first 3 posts.
We have been talking about this through out the day at work.

Gotcha....

As far as him being a mechanic, I believe it. Like others said earlier, he was prolly affected by the security that comes with familiarity. Never had a jack fall on him before, why now? It's not smart thinking, but it happens everyday.

wen i hafta work under the cars... i always drive the front or rear, which ever im working on, up onto a set of ramps, then jack up which ever side or both and use jackstands.. that way if it should ever fall, the ramps will stop it from crashing down all the way

I dont even trust my jackstands some times. Not that they have ever failed, but I hate being under a car for any longer then 5-10 mins.

Im glad my father got me that oil syphon kit last year for christmas. Now with the Mailbu, I never have to get under the car to change the oil. w00t w00t Ecotec!

a little delayed, but how do you get to the oil fiilter?

LTb1ow 10-06-2009 09:14 AM

Al pays a monkey to change that.

You pull a vaccum on the dipstick, works well if the dipstick goes to the bottom of the pan.. not sure on cars, but all boats use that method. Easy if the oil is not stone cold, or not HD40.

It's always better to do an oil change when the engine is warm.

Its much easier and we try to do that as often as we could, but most customers fail to help us out with scheduling.
