Tomorrow starts the big teardown. I'll post back tomorrow night with progress pics. With some luck, maybe the k-member will be out of the car tomorrow night.
|
Ive seen motors get brown with oil saturation, so I assume thats why the block is copper?
Looks pretty cool that way. |

Oil Saturation Starvation...hey they both start with an S and are almost spellled the same way.... |
More progress
Well I didn't get as far as I planned to today because of the machine shop...didn't get the heads until 5 pm. The new motor is just about done, just needs the intake manifold and crank pulley thrown on. Once it's on the k-member I'm putting a new rear main seal on it. I also started tearing down the car tonight. About an hour more of work and I'll be ready to lift the body off of the frame.

New motor placed on k-member Started wiring Tomorrow: Finish wiring Install new rear main seal Install clutch Rebolt trans Finish wiring And if there's enough time bolt it back up to the body. Then sunday I'll spend the day going over things and have it back on the road by mid day. |

shouldve kept the wheels on. that way you can kinda shimmy it around by the trans |
i used floor dollies under mine without the wheels on...
|
I was going to try keeping the wheels on, but as I pulled the body off, the struts kicked out and it would have been a pain in the ass to have a dolly on the trans and have 2 people hold the struts so we could move it around. I'm making it work. Here's some pics of the progress from yesterday:

heh good job. made it a little harder than it had to be but it works. ramps work well to get the body high enough but tires flat enough to get it up
|
Looks like some good progress. At least you're working on your F-body! I've spent the last 4 weeks working on my 4Runner and finally got it through inspection this week. I still need to do a few more things and it will be ready for the winter. And now with the SS sitting in the garage, I'm starting to think about doing some more mods to that.
|
i did the same thing with the struts kicking out, now i disconnect the strut from the lower a arm and take the spindle nut off the upper. i think its a little easier.
oh yeah, get new front brake hoses  those puppies don't like stretch! |
Lunch break time. Motor is all wired. New clutch is on. Another 45 mins worth of work and it'll be ready to start going back on the body. I need to wait for some help to show up before I can do that. Majority of the work was done by me, with 2 friends helping move stuff around/get me tools. I'll probably take my time wiring up everything back to the body, but if I can get the K-member back up into the body by 5 tonight, it might see life tonight :D. If not, tomorrow morning it should be running. Can't wait. After looking at the mess of wires/bare k-member last night, I was questioning whether I would be able to get this thing back together, but it's starting to look like something again. I'll post up late tonight on how far I got today.
|
nice work . you should post of a vid of it when its done and ready to fire.
|
good job man... looks like your kicken major ass on this.... mine is just about ready to go back in also... but its getting late and i have to work outside so i think im gonna leave that till tomarrow... ill take a progress pic later if you want to check my thread.... BTW this pic...
http://photos-c.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos..._7247478_n.jpg stupid ls1s with their neatly placed plug wires and headers!!! uggghhh |
yea they deff dont look as cool as SBC headers... but they are deff a better design as far as functionality goes... same goes for ls1 fire order.... doesnt sound as good cammed... but runs smoother and better...
