It is too late for internships this summer, but a decent alternative is office Temp jobs. I did a lot of those when I was in college. They usually pay at least $12/hr. It's a good way to get introduced to the business environment and sometimes it can lead to full-time work. You have to go through a staffing agency. There are plenty of them around.

all i know is dont deliver pizza i do and have been looking for a job since i started lol, people are super stingy with tips and you dont make anywhere near as much money as you used to, plus if you dont have a beater car youd have to buy one b/c delivering in a fbody isnt really that profitable

as posted above a staffing agency sometimes is the way to go, but if you're working at that 1 job and suddenly are gone, no unemployment just keep that in mind.

bar back at a club and learn to bartend, male escort, detailing shop, avoid anything retail they suck, be a bouncer or work for a private/security company. any branch of the military has its stupidity, god knows how we accomplish anything.

what is your degree in for school? it isn't too late to look for an internship... i mean it is cutting it close, but you may be able to find one..depends on what your degree program is

get a job at a garage, good year, firestone, etc.

go to sts, pepboys or walmart and get a job as tire thrower. youll make at least 10 bucks an hour slinging oil and throwing tires. its not a bad job and its super easy...plus it goes towards experience later on in life :nod:

Internships are pretty awesome; I've personally never had one that didn't pay very well. If you have training or education in a desirable field (I'm comp sci / security / forensics) you shouldn't have an issue finding one next summer.

EDIT: just saw your background so this may not be applicable, but definitely apply early next year for internships for whatever you may be doing at that time.

wally world at least pays a bit better than sts...but yeah theyre both pretty booty. pepboys pays the best for entry level installers, with room for advancing and doing actual repairs instead of maintenance...either way theyre both easy ways for a young kid to make 10 bucks n hour, work part time and have a little bit of experience...since he's looking into doing mechanical work later in life.

hahaha yeah i know a few mechanics and people treat them like crap constantly...yeah im still kinda deciding if i wanna do the GM tech thing or look into like a computer or engineer career....kinda dont wanna make my hobby a career and end up hating it

hey I was in the army, its not that bad... and try home depot, they hire summer help, that is how I started there. It is a little tough to find a job these days, even part time or just summer work as a lot of people don't have careers anymore and snag up a lot of part time jobs quick

Do yourself a favor and go into computing. No knock to engineers here, but the work is physically easier, the pay is significantly higher, and your job security is as well.

You can ask ANY mechanic that has been working for over 10+ years in the field - they now hate working on cars.

Did you ever work at any of those places? My top tech easily cleared over 90k every year. Can you explain how technicians are paid at all those places you mentioned? Enlighten me.

at least a good auto mechanic cannot be outsourced to china or India. I know a lot of programmers that want nothing to do with computers when they leave. I think any job is like that.

There are tons of computer / engineering positions which can not be outsourced, both for physical access requirements, and legal requirements revolving around security.

Also, to do CS, you don't ALWAYS have to be coding. I do scripting, coding, policy design, protocol engineering, amongst other things. I absolutely love what I do and look forward to going to work every day... though maybe I'm just a huge nerd.

yeah ive made the rounds at a few places...including the maintenance shops mentioned as well as dealerships. on the whole the dealerships are the best payers but highest turnovers and unless youve managed to be there for a long time your job is pretty much in constant jeopardy, as a dealer will have no problem finding willing work.

walmart is stricty per hour, but the easiest to negotiate a part time schedule to work around another job, or if youre young and dont NEED 40 hours solid. the least ive seen someone make at wally worlds tire/oil is 9.50 an hour. which is better paying than what he has at the moment.

pepboys has a per hour basis setup with monthly incentives for higher performance. avg pay is around 10-11 bucks an hour and a small bonus check per month based upon the amount of hours on the jobs youve accumulated. they also have two higher levels of mechanics, one of which is a higher paying per hour job with the duties raising from not only maintenance, but simple motor repairs....alt/waterpump/radiators/alignments/brakes with the same incentive bonus as the level 1 installer. the higher level they have is your basic flat rate mechanic level which takes on all the larger duties such as headgaskets/diagnostics/clutches/motors and gets paid per hour billed instead of per hour worked.

sts is pretty much the same setup as pepboys but theyre very short in the pockets.

sears is weird. they pay very low hourly wages but also pay commission per job. each job is worth a set amount of money ranging to a small amount per job to maybe 20 dollars or so per job depending upon the level the tech and the job is considered. level 1 is battery/oil/tires. level 2 is suspension/alignment and level 3 is brake tech. you can make a nice buck with sears if youre good with alignments.




all of which would provide him enough coin in his pocket for a summer job. if you can get in a dealership that would be a big step forward...if not, then theres no shame in taking a job where he can still get by with :nod:
