I just think these cars are overkill, both thte GT500, and the Z28 for the money, and performance. like one person said, by the time your done spending that kind of dough, you might as well of bought a used Z06, or a new Vette. They are taking the Z28 the wrong way, and Jeff is dead on about it, it was to be legal for SCCA Trans Am racing, but they are swinging it the other way for drag racing.
GM, if you can hear me, dont bring the Z28 out with this blowing, overweight abomination, bring it back to it's original roots, you already designed it to look like the first gens, might as well be nostalgic, and build it for road racing purposes. Leave the Z28 designation alone, and make that a "COPO" Camaro edition. |
I agree on that, but that just isnt going to happen. Someone didn't have access to a Camaro history book.
Z28 to me would be a 3700lbs powerd by the same LS3 with higher flow two mode exhaust, forged wheels with PS2's on them, larger brakes, reworked suspension, and Recaros inside. Start it at 39,995. Put some neat-o featuers like a G-meter in optional HUD |

You rub elbows with some higher ups Al, maybe throw that pitch at them :D |
You bastards...
3500lbs is gunna be hard without sacraficing the chassis's ability to handle power. Would you be willing to sacrafice power for weight? As it stands, the Camaro's chassis is designed to handle up to 600hp without problems. If you were to say, cut that max power down to 400hp, the car would weigh a lot less...but after 400hp, it would require a lot of weight. Example is the GT500 vs the GT. If you look at 09 GT, it was a bit over 3500lbs with a 300hp V8. The chassis had a limit of about 400hp, so when the GT500 came about, they had to really step up the chassis's strength to hold the power, and why the GT500 gains 400lbs, on top of that whole supercharged engine deal. |
One thing that Ford offers though is their white chassis Mustangs to private race teams, and Chevy should look into their process if they were to strenghten up the chassis. Ford takes a chassis, scraps off the cauk ( dont think thats spelled right) and weld all the panels instead of tack welds, this makes the chassis much stiffer. You gain road noise, squeeky noises, and possibly a harsher ride, but you know what you've gotten yourself into when buying a car with road racing visioned for it. IMO, 422hp is plenty for a 3500lbs car, it'll help you get to that corner, but its that weight that'll keep it from shooting out quicker. It would be nice to get away form the stereotype that these muscle cars were coming out with are too muscular ( overweight)
It would be like the 1LE package, you know your buying it without some creature comforts for handling capabilities. |
Im talking about actual cars for sale, not race cars.
GM does offer Body-In-White programs for Camaro, Corvette, and I think Cobalt as well as Cruze in Europe. The new GT is 3600+lbs. The 6th gen should also be in that range, power will be about the same. I would say that Alpha's chassis will be able to take 450hp, figuring that the new ATS will have a V model, and that will have to do battle with a 400+ M3 and 450hp C63, not to mention RS4/5. I expect that the ATS and Camaro will share a lot of features, along with the next gen CTS. |
What Im saying though is a production car with the white body work done to it to help make up for the strengthening of hte body, instead of adding more structural material.
and they do that with he cobalt and cruz, really? thats sweet actually! whats the price for one of those bodies? I heard fords is around 5K |
No idea, but Cruze kicks a lot of butt in WTCC in Europe.
|
i think a small displacement v8 that revs to the moon would be a cool option also

and yes, they switched to GT2 class, so they run the 5.5L now. |
5.5 is a class restriced engine size, we should see larger displacements then that. 5.5 is pretty much a race-only size. We might see a 5.7? The Gen V's are all new, sharing nothing with the Gen III/IV's

COPO cars were also 2x the normal price of a loaded SS Camaro.
A true ZL1 went for 8 grand, when a loaded 396 SS went for 4,500 or so. Thats an about a 70k Camaro. But those cars are cool..I guess its not cool when its new and modern? |

He was talking about the Z28 trim vs the SS trim and their hierarchy. |
Z24 and the like took the familiarity of the Z nomenclature and expanded it across the board for all Chevy's.
They did the same for SS badge. Z28 was the RPO code for the Trans Am spec Camaro. The Z28 vs GT500 will have a pretty even playing field in weight and power. Its gunna come down to the details to decide this. |
