Actually they were saying there were a bunch of aftershocks and there was a 7.something before the 8.9

Look at the power of modern infrastructure. An 8.9 earthquake and tsunami yielded relatively little damage. Compare to what happens in other countries, it looks like Japan was well prepared. I wish them the best though because that is still a terrible turn of events.
