The shop is awesome. Foreman likes it tidy and is pretry strict about it.

so Adam, are those the jobs where you'd say "yeaaaah, you ought to take this to the dealer" lol

MyFirstZ 03-04-2012 09:50 PM

I don't get to use that "you're going to have to take it to the dealer" excuse anymore

NJ Torque 03-04-2012 10:35 PM

Wow. They dont want us touching the insides of the motors... longblocks only. Do you need to be certified to get paid diag times?

MyFirstZ 03-04-2012 11:00 PM

We do heads, we normally don't do any bottom end work. But I have sen multiple guys do bare blocks.......

For this job I'm sure you would have the certifications just to be able to diagnose it. But no you don't need to be certified to get diag time.

There's more to it but I don't know, I have all my certs from BMW so I never really thought about it

88WS-6 03-05-2012 06:35 AM

That is a lot of work.

I bet business is good, since everyone in Morristown owns a BMW.

KevinW 03-05-2012 10:19 AM

I echo the WOW! But what are all those lines in the back of the motor? oil lines for the turbos?

Anti_Rice_Guy 03-05-2012 10:23 AM

Ridiculous.

NJ346 03-05-2012 10:26 AM

That is awesome. If I ever decided to be an auto tech, that's the kinda place I would want to be working at.

MyFirstZ 03-05-2012 12:02 PM

uhh that picture you have right there is the front. But those are all cooling lines for different fluids. Not sure which one you are referring to.

KevinW 03-05-2012 12:38 PM

:) I wasnt reffereing to a specific line, just all of them, the rubber ones (like power steering hoses) that run from one side of the engine to another.

MyFirstZ 03-05-2012 02:23 PM

The arched hoses are power steering, active roll stabilization and coolant. The metal one along the side are fuel lines, also have trans/oil lines and coolant hoses.

Also have some turbo coolant lines hanging down in that picture.

Nope, for when you are bringing food home for Thanksgiving dinner.

:bertstare:

was shure if it was for active suspention or for oil or something sloshing around in pan during cornering.

MyFirstZ 03-05-2012 05:05 PM

It's for the sway bar, the actual sway bar will use hydraulic pressure to twist to help prevent body roll.

Case in point, my wifes 2005 Mini Cooper S is 700 for the electric power steering pump, and about 1000 for the supercharger, which you literally have to take the front end off to get to it to check the fluid, oh and the water pump runs off of the supercharger, so if the back half dries up, yeah your beat (Common problem). The Aisin 6 speed auto trans is about 6000-7000 for a unit, and to change the fluid and filter, you once again have to remove the front end. The fan for the electric power steering pump is about 120 bucks, and is common to go bad. Collant tank, power steering lines, etc. All are prone to leaking, and BMW (who owns MINI) Doesn't want to man up and issue recalls for any of these, especially the transmission deal. The CVT's have a class action lawsuit on them right now, and were waiting for the Aisin to be added to the lawsuit.

About 80K is the average before they start to let go, and MINI slapped life time fluid stickers all over the pan, warning you can potentially void your warrenty if you replace the fluid. What they mean by that is the lifetime of the warrenty, then good luck from there, but it should be replaced every 40K. The other problem if the Valve body egg shapes due to using aluminum for the body and steel for the pistons. They have repair kits, but just to get an upgraded valve body it's 1200.....It's a money pit but damn it's fun to drive.

I still do recommend these cars, but with disclaimers...... Only get it in warranty, and if you do get out of warranty and/or modify I say you better have some money to drop on repairs

I can agree with that statement.
