Dunno.. the way I do it is I wait til my insurance policy ends; don't renew it. Let the registration end too. Never got a letter from DMV. Done it multiple times... it's been going on for a solid 4 years with me now.

I'm almost scared to turn in old plates to vehicles I no longer own cause I don't want to draw attention.


I stopped driving my K1500 back in 2010. I called Geico and told them to remove it from the policy, they never did. I got a bill saying I owed them $1,100 and I told them to shove it. Never had any issues with them or DMV after I did that.

I have plates from a random car we had in the family. Found them when cleaning out my grandmother's house and kept them, including a Bicentennial special plate they ran on the front of cars from 75-77. Still have the Texas plates from my Dad's 77 Firebird. No one has come after us about them. Hell we had the plates on the TA from when we first bought the car. I turned them in but we never got a letter demanding them back. My Uncle collects his old plates from cars as trophies. He hasn't been bothered either.

As for my 84 the registration is good, since they're QQs. But I'll have to renew this year. Talking to the woman at the insurance company, even she told me I may be able to just write down my policy number that I had it on before and renew it, it was the same as the daily driver. Providing I can just renew the QQ plates at any DMV. I've noticed they never actually check the policy numbers.

I have a bunch of plates on my wall, I made a nj from the floor to ceiling with them.

We had our balls busted numerous times about unregistered vehicles a few years ago. They are all gone now, so we don't have that problem anymore! However, I'm not sure every town does it but in Jefferson you can get a permit for your car and as long as you go to the town every 30 days to renew it they don't bother you and its free.

Seems it depends on the town, and the neighbors. If the neighbors want to bitch about the car guy having a bunch of nice cars, and they have the clout the car guy usually gets burned. It sucks but...thats why we move to the desert. :lol: You can't get away with things like you used to, my grandfather always was fixing junk yard finds. Pulled cars out of the yards, fixed them up and the family drove them. Included finds like a Road Runner and a BMW 2002. If we did that in the same town today we'd likely get besieged by complaints and demands that the car go. Andover has more than its share of cars lurking in yards and driveways. But no one has really complained so we're ok here so far.

I work for the DPW in my home town. Doesn't help me out if somebody complains but all my neighbors are cool. It pays off helping out your neighbors with snow plowing for free or not calling the cops during a party or fight lol...

To the OP, I'd try to sell one vehicle, and use the cash to register the others. Either that, or try to store them somewhere else for the time being. Good luck!

I think getting along with the neighbors goes a LONG way towards not having problems with cars or working on cars in your driveway. We help each other out when we can and are always courteous. I don't complain if they have big parties, and they don't complain if I'm wrenching on a vehicle. We did this to my old '85 Monte a few years ago -

Me and a few buddies stripped it in a day and I kept it wrapped under the tarp on my driveway for about two weeks until the scrap guy could haul it away. We also built the '88 on the driveway (check the link in my sig if you're interested) the same way. We're all on 50x100 lots, so my neighbors are really close. Knock on wood, I've never had anyone complain.

Yep hes right if they were covered they cant bother you unless they try to sight you for some sort of ordinance about a vehicle limit on property or the surface they are on.

I would throw dead plates on them and see if they still bother you. If they do as said you can register a car with no insurance legally. The state doesnt obligate insurance on a car at time of registration but rather proof that you currently hold a policy with a company.

FYI the state doesn't actually require you to show proof of insurance. they just ask you for a policy #. and then they take that little card and throw it in a milkcrate and it gets stored. I have registered cars numerous time that didn't have insurance on them. They just want your policy number to see if you have insurance. They have never asked me for proof of coverage.
