j0n did the Sawzall, a/c delete for me, last year, It was great, nothing like a pile of useless, a/c parts in the middle of your driveway!

The 2000 SS with the LS1 has 2 belts. The AC is driven separately from the rest of the stuff so removing the belt and AC drag(I know it has a lock up clutch but there is still parasitic drag) has to free up at least 1-2 hp. AC was not available on any solid lifter chevy's back in the day. AC was not available on 67-72 Z28's or 396/375 hp cars or 427 COPO cars.

DieselKickYoAss4Sure 03-20-2007 08:15 PM

1 Hp is highly doubtful mayby a fraction of a 1 hp but w/e it dosnt matter!

Rich189 03-20-2007 09:06 PM

i have to keep ac once it hits over 95 my girlfriend starts to bitch and moan about how hot it is....its just not worth 1hp to listen to her complain that only happened 2 or 3 times last summer though

EVIL90SS 03-20-2007 09:42 PM

only retards and f***ing clampets take out working a/c systems...ohh yeah, and s*** a** third gens to squeeze more power of the squirrels running on the lil wheel they call the 305.

Savage_Messiah 03-20-2007 10:41 PM

WTF... I see this misconception all over the place. Not calling you out Dan, just that's the only word I can think of for it right now.

I understand that the a/c compressor removes a lot of condensation from the air.... but every car I have ever driven or been in, heat on full blast instantly defogs anything. I've even proved people wrong in their own cars about this. No a/c anything in my camaro, and it still is an instant defog when i turn the heat to the windshield vent.

ac doesn't decrease fuel mileage at all!

Mythbusters did a segment of their show about that. They took 2 identical trucks. One had the AC blasting and the other did not. The one with the AC on went 15 miles less than the one with it turned off.

interesting!

Tru2Chevy 03-21-2007 08:20 AM

Many of us who take our AC out don't do it for the 1ish hp gain from not spinning the pulley - it's for the 35-50 lb weight savings (depending on the year). Or for some it's just to clean up the engine bay and make it cleaner.

Was it 50? I knew it had a 5 in it.

DieselKickYoAss4Sure 03-21-2007 03:11 PM

no it was more like 5! and that could jsut be a difference in driving style around the oval. i get 34 mpg at 75 mph in the fiero ac full blast frost coming out of the vents and 30 mpg with windows down at the smae speed cruise control set.

Just looked on wikipedia. The car with the AC off went 30 more laps around the track than the one with the AC on. They also did seperate tests on the trucks to determine they're identical fuel efficiency. They both had the cruise set at 55 for the test and only 5 gallons of gas.

Mythbusters, that monument of scientific methods. :) I always found that at highway speeds, my cars got equal or better MPG with AC on/windows up then AC off/windows down. We tried it on a trip in my Civic back in the day. If you want to say the additional weight costs some MPG, sure, but it is pretty negligible. I would speculate AC diminishes MPG around town, but again, there are so many variables, so what? Laying off the skinny pedal on the right is a far bigger influence to local MPG. The argument is weak on both sides and therefore the MPG argument is moot.

I think we all agree the HP impact is also negligible, especially with more modern compressors, which I am pretty sure are more efficient then old C6 compressors.

And on cool high humidity days, AC does make defrosters work better. There is no doubt about that. The AC died in my Olds late last summer. There are some days, especially cooler rainy days, that the windows all fog up (not just the windshield) and the best I can hope for is a mostly clear windshield. The condition grows worse with more people in the car due to the extra body heat. There is a reason why modern cars turn the AC on when you hit the defrost button.

I know it hurt the resale on my 82 Trans Am. A lot of people called, heard no AC and said ‘no thanks’. T-Tops, PW and all.

Justin is right – clutter or weight savings for real race cars. I like my DD AC, I hate going a lot of places (like work) all sweaty. I better get it fixed.

Besides, pulling the AC is just a redneck hack.

JL8Jeff 03-21-2007 05:02 PM

For long trips at highway speeds leaving the AC on won't really hurt much at all. But for daily driving with traffic lights and stop signs it will make a big difference in mpg. I took the belt off because something was squealing real bad. But I'm sure it picked up a couple of HP as well because the AC belt is tensioned and spins a weighted pulley on the AC compressor. The more I thing about it, it has to be at least 3 hp I picked up!

i LOVE my ac i just re did all or the rings new blower and refilled it and i could never be with out it the ttops suck in direct sun and slow traffic and when its raining your screwed.

:stupid: out of all the people on here i expect you Jeff, to fix you car properly than just romoving the belt to avoid a problem that is all!

JL8Jeff 03-21-2007 07:43 PM

It'll get fixed. Probably right before I go to sell it! I do want to run a couple of tanks without it to see if there is an increase in mpg. And I just remembered that I'll probably want the AC working when I have to pick up a new keg in the middle of the summer.

As long as he leaves the original compressor there to keep the car #s & date code matching. ;)

A/C isn't necessary when you are younger and don't care about sweating like a pig. When you are driving around and meeting clients, going to lunch, working with others it's not very pretty to be sitting in the sun sweating through your dress shirt and stinking up the joint.

I love my A/C in the Hawk and the Altima. If I'm not working I don't use it, but if I have to work then the A/C is a MUST.
