on these cars, yes.... g bodies.. whole 'nother car

NastyEllEssWon 04-02-2009 03:26 AM

correction. on 4th gens the hardtop and ttop got the same structure. all other generations they were cut into an existing hardtop.

ive owned one of all. i have to say i enjoy ttops immensely but theres nothing like pushing a button and letting the sun soak in. verts are only good for cruising anything else and youd need a more rigid structure

Uuuh yeah! I didn't know the joys of a vert until I got my hands on one! Totally effortless! I don't think I've taken my T-Tops off my Formula in over a year cuz I'm too lazy. lol

I think T tops are cool, but I prefer the simplicity of hard tops. I wouldn't dismiss a car because of T tops, but I definitely wouldn't own a convertible.

You guys are saying that a 4th gen t-top car is as structurally sound as a hardtop car?

LTb1ow 04-02-2009 05:24 PM

Kinda sorta, yea.
Have you seen the T top conversion write ups?

LTb1ow 04-02-2009 05:27 PM

You only cut the side bars out, so yea you are weakening the car, but I always figured the hard top had more under it.

miketa95 04-02-2009 05:29 PM

i've never experienced t tops or a convertible (fbody).

OK, you corrected yourself. Thanks.

LTb1ow 04-02-2009 05:36 PM

Yup, although its still not much to really be removing.

You're cutting a section of steel that connects points a and b and replacing it with something that "latches" in. Now, I'm not an engineer but, I don't think it takes one to figure out which one is stronger.

FIcamaroRE92 04-02-2009 06:00 PM

t-tops

yeah but how much of a difference does it really make?

the roof of a car, especially a unibody car, is a significant structural piece. can you get away with cutting it? Sure. would it be stronger if it was left intact? Yes.

ETA: think about it like this. all the weight between the front and rear wheels is pushing down on the floor, which in turn is trying to push the top of the front windshield towards the top of the rear hatch.

LTb1ow 04-02-2009 06:20 PM

Yea, install SFCs and you will see how weak the cars are.

sweetbmxrider 04-02-2009 06:41 PM

ok i understand. i do have subframe connectors i need to weld in, eventually

JL8Jeff 04-02-2009 07:43 PM

I've been through enough t-top and convertibles and I have no need for either any more. I hate the leaks and squeaks with t-tops and I don't care to have the sun beating on me while driving the car so I prefer a hard top. I don't even take the t-tops shades out of my SS. I get enough sun out on the golf course and in my boat.

LTb1ow 04-02-2009 09:15 PM

Woohoo! I figured I was the only one. LOL hardtop FTW.

7998 04-03-2009 07:57 AM

Vert hands down, I'd almost rather have an LT1 vert than my t-top LS1, almost.

T-Tops hand down.

I only like T/A drop tops, especially Brian's (BlackBird) & Franks (Fozzi).

3rd & 4th gen cars need a B-Pillar, it just defines the shape of the car to me.
