...and so ends the magical run. Sucks they lost on such a cheesedick goal but that's the way the game goes.
What a great, great series. |
And now we wait another decade for a finals matchup. The Flyers just cannot get past the speed and passing of the west coast man. And you are so right, that was such a cheesy goal, If I was Kane, I'd ask for a redo
|
I don't know if it was Chicago's speed that did it. They just had a lot of bad, lazy turnovers. I'm trying really hard not to rip Leighton, he's a 2nd string or 3rd string goalie that, in part, got the team to the Finals, can't ask for much more....but two REALLY soft goals.....frustrating....
|
The last one really burned me, bad angle shot, and what not, but Niemi had alot of LUCKY, and I do mean LUCKY saves in this series. I do believe he sold his soul to the devil.
|
There's no question he got lucky but a save is a save and he made them when he team needed them.
It also doesn't help when the Flyers shoot right at him....how Carter didn't bury that shot with Niemi flopping around like a fish out of water at the end of the game is beyond me. |
I thought the first 4 games were evenly matched. The last 2 Chicago outplayed the Flyers but it still went to OT. Leighton gave up way too many soft goals in finals. Of course, the Flyers let them skate into the zone, skate across the front and then shoot from the side. They never tried to stop those shots and that's what killed them. Chicago won 3 games by 1 goal, not exactly dominating but it got the job done. The Flyers needed to shoot more, they only had 24 shots in game 6 when you're back is against the wall! Carter and Gagne became non factors. Carter definitely did not have his good shot and he took too long to take the shot whenever he had the puck. Yup, it will be another 10-15 years before they get back to the finals.

I was there last nite and Im still feeling sick to my stomach after the way it ended.I didnt see the puck go in,and the red light never went on.We left right as they announced the goal.Really didnt feel like watching chicago skate the cup on our ice.Flyers did have alot of chances but they totally got outplayed as you could tell by the shots on goal. There were a few "phantom"calls against us by the referee(pronger high stick)looked like he hit him in the chest.Sharp`s goal on the 4 on 4 was one leighton should have had.All in all it was a great playoff run and the guys deserve alot of credit for making it to the finals. So now its another summer of "maybe next season".
|
they need to go back and work on their puck handling a little better, too many times losing the puck. and this passing setup for a half hour on a powerplay, no wonder why they only got 1 shot in two powerplays. i am glad they got where they did, but they were fumbling and runnign around atthe end to try and catch up. Let's hope they hone in on their skills this summer and really come out swinging next season.
Pronger has been around how many years, and his continueing problem of getting petty penalties was hurting. We also have to realize that Gange and Carter are still hurting, they arent 100%, so I have to give them credit. We need more speed, we go t the grunt, but thats not goign to help us when the puck is stranded in the middle of the ice with a great opportunity of going in fro ma rebound, or a breakaway, but we die off quickly with the speed and it gets tipped away from their sticks. We always looked strong int the third period, like I said, which tells me Chicago wasent relaxing, they were giving it their all, but Niemi really was the only thing standing int the way of the Flyers flurishing in the third. It just wasent ment to be, and I was prepared for them to lose, but I still feel like **** to see them get that far, come back from no where, and to just come up short.... |
That goal was a strange one and you couldn't tell what was going on watching the tv. Even the replays are tough to tell how it got through the way it did. I've never seen that many fans in one place so quiet. But it was a weak goal, just like the game winner in game 1. The game 1 result pissed me off for 3 days.

poor flyers

The hockey fan in me is ecstatic about the entertainment factor, obviously the Flyers fan in me is disappointed.
I'm glad that the ratings were high, I'm glad it was GREAT hockey without Sid the Crybaby and Ovechkin. Two teams with history, two teams with great storylines.....it was definitely a great year not only for the Flyers/'hawks but also for the NHL. I still think the Flyers could have and maybe even should have won this series even if they were up against a better team. One thing is safe to say, this team did not quit, they did not stop....hopefully they can use this as a springboard into next year...but they definitely need to make a few changes to address so weak spots. |
hats off to the flyers! i didn't think they would go as far as they did. maybe next year.
|
Neither did I  I'll be the first to admit I wrote them off. I was at a pub watching the last game of the regular season against the Rangers( garbage team) and said to a friend right after Boucher made the save that they'll maybe beat NJ since they match up well....after that say good night.
Obviously they had an easier time since the Pens and Caps got knocked out but still.....they shocked me. Unfortunately I was right when I predicted 'hawks in 6 :( |
We need a legit #1 Goalie that will stop the typical shot!! If it wasnt for the cheap goals we would have won the series!! I dont think Chicagos goalie gave up easy goals like our goalie did! Both the goalies made tough saves when the team needed them to but the difference is that our goalie gave up weak goals just about every game! You play the puck as a goalie.. You dont play the pass. And for crying out loud face the shooter!! That Kane goal should have been sticked asside or caught if Leighton was facing the shot! It looked like he went down into a butterfly towards the front of the net anticipating a pass to the front of the net and not a shot!!
It was a great run but with Washington and Pittsburg in our conferance its going to be hard to get there again! This was one of those seasons that everything sorta fell into our lap. |
Leighton wasn't playing the pass, he went down at the wrong time and it found a way through. It was a bad angle, there wasn't anywhere for him to come out and challenge. He played it fine, it was just a fluke. Not sure how he could have caught a puck that was along the ice.
|
Kane was to the right of the net and Leighton was facing the front of the net!
He went down to protect the post like goalies do to prevent wrap around attempts! I thought he went down in a butterfly. Still there was no reason to go down at all for that shot! Keep ur stick on the ice or turn and face the shooter! This was a great run but this team hasnt won a cup since what 75? It has been to the finals 6 times since and have not won! To come back and force overtime in your building I was sure they would win and force a game 7. What happened was the worst thing I could have imagined!!. If Leighton got beat on a breakaway goal or a good goal were he played it right then it would not be as bad! Hey this is Philly right? There is always next year!! |

I didnt say come out to challenge I said turn and face the shooter! |
He played it fine, you play that scenario again 100 times and he makes that save 99 times, it was a fluke goal. On that play, on that angle you absolutely, 100% hug the post.
He wasn't playing the pass, he was doing what he was supposed to do on a bad angle and a player rushing down the side, you hug the post, take the short side completely out of the equation, again it just found a way through, it was able to sneak through him. With Kane's speed there was a good chance he was going to slide around the other side of the net, you have to take that into account. Had Leighton then missed a wrap around on the other side people would have have bitched about that. He just flat out didn't get down in time, that's pretty much it. He was in position to make the save, he just didn't. |

He could have and should have at least kept his stick on the ice while hugging the post and just sticked the puck to the boards!! Its the Stanley cup Finals! Its either win or go home. Its not a regular season game. You can not give up a goal like that! You just cant! He knows it. If he would have made that simple routine stop then the Flyers more then likely would have won the game! This is up there with the Mitch Williams pitch to Joe Carter!! |
There shouldn't have been overtime, there was no reason whatsoever Carter shouldn't have buried a wide open net instead of shooting it right at Niemi.
Coulda, shoulda, woulda. It's over, it doesn't matter. It's frustrating that Leighton didn't make that save but there was much, MUCH more to that loss and the loss of the series. If people want to keep keying on Leighton that's fine, ignoring other glaringly obvious issues shows that a lot of people aren't knowledgeable in the sport(not saying that about you, just generally speaking). |
Here is a quote from Leighton on CBS sports on the overtime goal!!
Leighton stopped 37 shots -- just not the last one. "I went to the corner and saw a guy drive the net," he said. "I thought he was going to pass it but he threw it at my feet and it went underneath me." Complete story here... http://www.cbssports.com/nhl/gamecen...;pageContainer Sounds like he was looking for a pass which led to him not playing the shot correctly!! You play who has the puck!! You dont play the pass as a goalie! If you do then you start giving up weak goals!! Your Defense plays the pass. So you go ahead and play that scenario 100 times. I bet you it goes in more then 1 time!! |
That's fine, didn't see that quote, regardless he was still in position to make the save and just didn't. Have you even played the game? Even in his position he should have made the save and just flat out didn't....you can sit there and critique it all you want. He just didn't make the save.
But again, there are/were bigger issues that just Leighton. |
