Good thread, let's keep it on target. My turn, I guess.

I’m a Business Systems Analyst and Project Manager with 16 years experience. Which means I write system requirements, create user training and documentation, manage project testing and implementation, and some production support. I have experience in several industries including insurance, DB and DC retirement plans, education, and automotive retail, and have strong skills in business process development, re-engineering, and documentation.

Anyone have expereince with sites like LinkedIn? It's time to be pro-active and go job hunting, while I still have one. ****ing wall street scumbags.

I got invited to LinkedIn a few weeks ago, looks pretty good so far. I need to spend some time and really look through it.

LinkedIN is a decent site to have your credentials listed, which is several steps above using something like Monster or Career Builder. But like all professional employment sites, its really who you know and how much effort you put into your search. Use LinkedIN as a passive reference for employers who are checking up on you after you've had the initial phone interview; don't rely on it to sell your skills and experience.

Time to dust off the rolodex and call in a few favors. 8-)

CHRIS67 10-24-2008 08:16 AM

I've been using LinkedIn for about a year now and still haven't found much use for it. Good job postings etc. and some OK help topics, but I'm not so sure if it is the best place to network. Probably have more opertunity at classes, trade shows, etc..

Use the professional organizations you belong to. For example, I have my PMP certification and regularly attend any PMI meeting in NJ. Just by networking with the folks who attend those meetings, I get ideas as to who is hiring, what the expectations are, which companies have a hiring freeze, etc.

You can also meet other people who are career coaches or consultants. For example, the September meeting had a panel of speakers discussing this very topic - networking and job hunting. Check out www.jhacareers.com and see if John Hadley can help you, either directly or through the materials he provides on his website.

Getting tidbits that help you polish your interview skills, job prospecting and networking are invaluable. You just need to spend the time and effort doing it.

So Dave, who's hiring? :)

I'm an evil tow truck driver. I take your car and make you pay betwine $100-$475 to get it back, depending on vehicle weight and what was done to tow it. I have an awesome job, in summer depending on the week paychecks can be around 900-1300 a week....I love it.

BTW its private property impounding, the company I work for is not affiliated with the city besides the ordanace and laws that dictate pricing.

I work in land surveying. I am mostly in the office doing autocadd drawings, plotting deeds, writing legal descriptions, preparing stake-out for the crews, checking cut sheets. Sometimes I am outside filling in when someone is on vacation or sick. Good job when the economy isn't in the ****ter, but not so good right now. Most of my friends are out of work collecting unemployment and it might be a long cold winter...So much of what we do is tied to housing and/or the ability to secure financing (construction loans, mortgages, commercial real estate, etc.)

So far we are keeping busy enough.
