My Berger Panel
So the other day I saw a picture of a Camaro with a Berger panel with Camaro filled in with Bondo. Then in the middle of the panel he had a first generation Z/28 emblem. I loved this look so much that I went to the junk yard and got a spare panel the next day. Today I sanded it down, filled in the Camaro with bondo, and primed it. Here is my progress this far
http://i39.tinypic.com/2zeed8h.jpg Question 1: I am going to paint it gloss black. Any paint suggestions? Question 2: Does anyone have a spare Z/28 emblem I can buy from you? Sorry for the quality its a cell pic. I will paint it tomorrow hopefully. 8-) |
ask ar0ck and teds89iroc. they did this:

Looks good so far! Thats exactly what I did when I made Alex's panel. I sprayed it with semi-gloss instead of gloss though. I'll upload pics later tonight when I get back home. |
i was just thinking of doing that when i was driving to work today
|
I am waiting on the Z/28 emblem. I need to wet sand the black I layed down and spray again. Other than that I am really happy with how it is turning out. Its so hard to get inspiration to do anything lately seeing as its -4 degrees...

Here is what it looked like before I started:

That looks really good. Im just freaking out about the gloss black. I need it to be as perfect as possible. So Im taking my time.
|
i did mine gloss black. didn't do anything else though like fill the letters. no emblems. i like it alot.

Hey sweetbmxrider what kind of paint did you end up using?
|
body shop did it for me :D
|
Ok so I am having a little trouble with the paint. I though I could get away with a Duplicolor gloss black spray but that didnt work out too well. I got fish eyes all over the place. So now I am sanding it all back down and redoing it... I am not sure which direction to go from here, and I cant afford to have a body shop do it. Any advice on paints?

Make shure the surface temp of the panel isint below the amount prescribed in the directions on the bottle. Dont know If it really matters, but it did when I painted my headlight pockets.
|
my guess would be there are contaminants on the surface or moisture.
|
fish eyes are caused by oils on the surface...most likely hand prints. You need to wipe down the panel with a wax and grease remover on a rag (paper towel) and a dry rag (paper towel) right before you spray it. Temperature does affect how the paint lays too.
|
Temp affects the drying time, just let it sit over night with this cold weather. Wax and Grease remover is available at any hardware store. Wipe it down with one cloth and then wipe it off with another let it evaporate off, then spray your paint in nice even coats, give it a min or two in between coats so it gets tacky.

i usually was it with dish soap and water before i spray...

So I got my Z/28 badge yesterday. I drilled the holes and mounted it and it looks great. I was going to upload a picture but my school blocks every site known to man (including this one). I am thinking for the paint dilema, maybe I will get semi-gloss paint and finish it off with a layer of clear. The semi-gloss will be easier to lay and less likely to show imperfections and then the clear will bring the shine. What do you guys think?
*Edit I got it to work http://a.imagehost.org/0404/b_panel.jpg |

And what color is your car? |
did you fill your hatch lock hole :-?
i think semi gloss then cleared should look good. wet sand the semi gloss before laying the clear. let it cure for i don't know how long then use some product to shine it up! it would be cool if you made the emblem pivot to cover the hole or had some sort of cover for it. |

My car is Polo green for the record. Yes I did Bondo my key hole. It looks really clean and if worse comes to worse I can drill the hole out (but I dont think I'll need to). I sprayed it with some semi gloss and I am pretty happy thus far. Heres some pics

Looks good, what kind of clear do you plan on using?
|
I believe its a clear from Duplicolor. I am going to wet sand it tomorrow and see where that lands me (whether or not I need another coat). And I will go from there..
|
looks good!
|
Going to have to change mine now.
