an inspection station.

have your friend take it to a private station, though, not the DMV's.

what year/make/model car does he have...and what about his car isnt going to pass?

jims69camaro 05-31-2005 01:26 PM

the private stations tend to be more lenient, depending on what needs fixing. they also tend to be able to fix whatever's broke.

i would add to that how is the car used?

colletors registration is always an option if the car is limited use or can be made to appear limited use("fix" the odo) :)

So wait ... if you have collector's insurance inspection isn't required? I know if you have QQ plates you don't have to take it. I have collector's ins. on my Firehawk and it's up for inspection in Oct. That'd be cool if I don't have take it.

Firebird67dude 05-31-2005 10:01 PM

i need inspection too.. mine went bad on the TA 7 of 02.

not collectors insurance, collectors registration. it is for any car less than25years old. basically you declare teh car as limited use and are not supposed to drive more than 3k miles a year(easy enough to work around :) ) you keep your regular insurance or you can have your policy modified to represent a limited use vehicle(usually lowers premiums dramatically)
you still have to meet safety and noise for your particular year vehicle, but you do not go through emissions testing as long as the mileage shown on your ODO reflects less than 3k miles per year.

I just got Collector registration on my '88 SS. You can only apply when the car is first registered, or when your registration is due. You cannot change status mid-year. I went to DMV in Englewood, got the forms, filled 'em out, and they charge you an extra fee for the sticker. They give you a voucher which you bring to a regular state inspection facility (not a gas station). Bring the voucher to the office area, tell the person you have a Collector Reg, they'll come out and take the info on your car and slap the triangle-shaped sticker on the window.

And, AFAIK, you do not have to pass safety or noise. The guy didn't ask to look at my front windows to see if they were tinted (they are), or start the car to hear how loud it is.

I think I am going to go that route with my '87. I don't think it will come close to passing emmisions, but I'll test it out at dad's shop first ;)

it will if you get the tune right. i passed with the 350/carb in the '87, and plan on doing the same once i get the 406 together for it. it's gotta be lean, though...

What cam did you have in the 350 though? I know mine isn't huge (230/236, .490/.490, 110 LSA ground +4) but the only emissions equipment it has are the dual cats in the Y-pipe. General concencus seems to be that I can lean it out, and turn the idle up a bit to get it to go through, so hopefully that will work (as long as they don't do a visual).

Like I said, Dad runs a private inspection station (and no, he won't give out stickers) so I can at least test it there and see how it does first.
