LT header guys....

There are alot of guys with long tube headers and other mods that make their car obviously not able to pass emissions. What do you guys do about it? Just take your chances with an expired inspection, pay someone off, go to camden...?

Mike 01-13-2009 01:10 AM

if you have to ask.........

anyone with obd2 can pass emissions as long as they have cats and a good tune........i dont see why obd1 cars wouldnt pass the sniffer with cats and a good tune...

without cats, well... your better off pm'ing people that you notice mentioning it in their sig, because no one will post publicly about inspection hookups

MonmouthCtyAntz 01-13-2009 06:18 AM

Everyone pass's w/ lts just make sure you have cats/air hook ups

JL8Jeff 01-13-2009 08:43 AM

They make emission's longtube headers so you can install them and keep your car somewhat legal. OBDI will still need to pass the sniffer so dual cats would probably be needed along with a tune to make adjustments.

LTb1ow 01-13-2009 12:40 PM

So you guys are saying with LTs and dual cats, you pass visual?

should be fine

LTb1ow 01-13-2009 01:21 PM

Hm ok, now what would happen if you pass the sniff test (OBDI) but fail visual? Is that just a total fail?

Mike 01-13-2009 01:23 PM

yes. its the same as passing the obd2 scan and failing visual....

LTb1ow 01-13-2009 01:24 PM

Ok, thanks.

Why wouldnt you, inspectors dont know the differance from one header to another...there just looking for the cats

LTb1ow 01-13-2009 01:32 PM

The header has nothing to do with it, the location of the cat is what is important here. And since every LT setup moves the cat, its illegal.

No kidding, what im saying is they dont know the differance if there moved from the original location or not...Knew more then a few people fly through Nj inspection w/ catted LT lsx setups. Most places dont even look under the car as long as everything emmisions wise checks out.

LTb1ow 01-13-2009 01:44 PM

Ok, come June, I will go through, if I fail, its your fault.

my grandma can tell the difference.

i think if you fail a visual you might not have to pass emissions again. not to certain though.

like everyone has said, you can legally run long tubes.

Your grandmother might but the inspectors dont, nor do they care... as long as your not throwing codes and have cats.

If you fail anything they run the whole car through again anyway. Years ago it wasnt like that.

if you fail the safety portion of an inspection and pass the emissions, you will only need to pass safety again as long as you reinspect within the time limit. i am not sure if cats will fall under safety though, i doubt it actually.

you may get lucky with going to private shops or state inspectors not popping hoods, but cats not in the stock location, missing, or emissions equipment tampered with is a failure and possibly would have to return to a specific state facility where they are super anal and will want to see everything is perfect.

miketa95 01-13-2009 02:13 PM

my car only has one cat, and I plan on getting them after I get a DD so i kinda don't want it to be legal.

Plus I also have tinted windows so no matter what I'm failing.

sweetbmxrider 01-13-2009 02:17 PM

eh, unless you are building a race car you will want an inspection sticker. they are over $100/ticket for failure to inspect

I reccomend keeping it legal. Alot of these guys run around w/ ory's because there alot cheaper. If they ever run into a emmisnions checkpoint there screwed. Theres not many of them but they exist. Not sure how your getting by w/ the tint. When I bought my 97z it had full tint and I was pulled over 4 times in the matter of 2 days. Im driving around right now w/ my license plate in the window trying to duck cops

miketa95 01-13-2009 02:26 PM

I've lucked out with the tint.. I don't drive around alot though, basically school is it.

sweetbmxrider 01-13-2009 02:27 PM

i have been stopped twice for tint in 4 years. it depends on the town

Yeah, but an inspector can't see down inside the engine compartment to find the exhaust manifolds or headers on a 4th gen. The closest thing to truly legal would be the MAC mid-length headers which might put the driver's side cat in the right place on an LS1 car. The old ASM mid-length headers for the LT1 worked well and gave the ability to keep the cat(s) in the stock y-pipe location. LT's are only worth 2-4 hp over the ASM mid-lengths. George Baxter was making over 700 hp with his setup. As for the ORY, it's pretty easy to add dual 3" cats to an ORY and you can usually find them for sale used or cheap on LS1Tech or Ebay. As for tint, that's just another excuse to get pulled over and then they'll check for other violations!

What ever happen to GB, I remember years ago watching him make a few 9 second passes @ Etown in his anniv. vert.
