5th Gen camaro on FIRE!

While riding my Harley on my way to work this morning. Right before the Pulaski sky way in Newark NJ on the 1&9 North I saw a little convoy of 4 new Camaros driving slow on the local side. I was on the express side I slowed to see and I saw a bunch of smoke coming from the lead Camaro. As I rode side by side I saw Full Blown Fire coming out from underneath. No exageration this was basicly a torch fire with flames shooting at least 3-4 feet under the carriage of the car. I quickly jumped the medium and stopped the lady who was driving and told her the car was on fire to stop, and get away from the car. She pulled over shut the car down and quickly got away. The flames died down almost immediately after she shut it down, but was starting to smoke heavily still. I left as soon as I knew she was ok but the car was still smoking when I left. So I dont know the end result if that thing got engulfed or not. This is something that should not happen to a new car. Could not believe my eyes. I still dont believe what I saw. How can I buy this vehicle now seeing something like that happen. If she would have drove any further I a convinced that car could have blown up the way that flames were shooting out.

Well since the lady was ok, I can go forth and be sarcastic...

I was late for work and I was not going near that thing any ways. Due to all these people losing there jobs you think the quality of these cars built are going to be affected?

No man I was on my Harley. I saw that fire Instincts took over. I am telling you 3-4 feet of flames. That had to been a fuel leak that caught fire. Only thing I can think of to do that..

How so? The battery cable leading to the starter? A loose cable would fry but damn 3-4 feet of flames!

NJ346 05-23-2009 12:40 PM

How would a lady not smell the smoke?

LuvMyF8LWS6 05-23-2009 01:04 PM

That's really heroic of you to save her like that! You did your good deed!

the cable apparently shorts out on the starter body. A short= sparks, excessive heat, fire. Not sure what would burn under the car, unless they are undercoated.

Kudos to you for doing what you did. :)

I thought the battery cable/starter issue was just for the V8's?

why wouldn't any of the other 3 pull next to the lead car and say something was wrong?

I think it is, but I didn't see him say v6 / v8 anywhere in the thread....

That's my vote too. Hopefully it was just someone who ignored the battery cable recall and this was the result.
