monster clutches

well after are little track outing on the 20th my clutch is completely toast. looking for recommendations. I have been looking at monster clutches and they seem to be the best bang for your buck. any one heard good or bad about them.

LTb1ow 10-25-2009 02:36 PM

Read up on tech on them. They just had a failure with something.

Yes, I believe it was a string of bad pressure plates.

Talk to JS Performance. He can set you up with a nice custom clutch installed for a good price. Both NJSPEEDER and cbrrmike at the rental were running custom clutches from him, pretty sure that JerzLT1 is running one of JS's clutches as well.

i already talked to josh first. he doesnt sell his clutches outright. i take pride in doing all the mechanical work myself. dont really want to pay someone to put it in.

any track passes? how much power do you have?

emolineaux 10-25-2009 07:08 PM

no track passes yet. i dont normally have time to go down to atco. not sure on my power right now. stock motor was rated at 345hp 380tq i have an underdrive. full exhaust, fast intake 92mm tb ram air and slp lid and a tune. so i could imagine its up a little higher than that. but i only got the stage 2 rated to i think 525 hp/tq. so i know that will hold just fine for what i have. ive abused it a little and havent had a problem. it hooks well all i have to do is get some nice tires so i can take my power to the ground lol.

just so you know i have a JS clutch in my green car, i understand the pride part but having it done right and it working the way you want is worth it

edit: id put my clutch up against a monster clutch any day :)

I have a JS clutch as well. No track passes yet, but it is holding up well. I like to think with my 3:73 gears and big cam, I am giving it a workout even without going to the track.

Aside from the "Just go to JS and support the club" crew...I have a monster clutch. Stage 3, full bolt-on ls1, tick master cylinder, moser 9" with 4.11s. The clutch takes 6K clutch dumps without a problem. I have about 7K miles on mine and about 25 track passes. The "failure" that people have misinformed you about only effected 10-15 clutch orders since the beginning of monster clutches. Go green, you won't be disappointed.

Btw-the monster clutch caused me to snap an axle and tear up a posi in the 10 bolt. So if you have a 10 bolt...beware!

really? remember when they said they found ALL of the defective pressure plates? yeah my friend still had one and was NEVER CONTACTED. they dont know when the machine started producing them, only when they caught it and stopped. btw a stock clutch can break a 10 bolt, your not exactly breaking new ground with that statement. this isnt "support the club and go to JS" this is my clutch takes 6k clutch dumps with 75 more hp then you

lol, all I'm saying is the OP sounds a lot like me in the whole taking pride for my own work sense. I would have been more than happy to give JS my money, but he likes doing things his way, which is great for him. In the end, I ended up saving over $150 compared to a ballpack JS had quoted me, so it's not so much about the savings, it's about going to the track and saying you've built the car with your hands, your tools, and your know how. We'll see how the level 3 compares in a few weeks when the new setup is done.

j0n 10-28-2009 07:52 PM

Avoid monster. To make a long story short, I purchased my Monster stage 3.5 on July 29th... I still don't have a working car.

JerzLT1 10-28-2009 09:18 PM

for j0n to post on the boards you know he has to be disgruntled lol

exactly. anyone can take a car to any shop and dump ten grand in it and have a race car. I have about 13,000 into the car right now including when i bought it for 9500. I have done every ounce of work on it myself except the tune. i need a clutch i can put in myself. will hold the power i make right now about 400 to the ground. and that i can slip out of the hole so i dont destroy my rear? and i really dont think either of those clutches are meant to be slipped.

i like the ram powergrip HD and the spec stage 3. i used to hate the specs bc i had a few go defective on me a few years back but last november i bought a rebuilt spec stg3 from a friend of mine for the T/A and its been driven by me with a buttload of trackpasses on slicks, drs, and street tires. not to mention all the beatings it takes on the street as well. and yes thats with a 10bolt under it. ive also put a 100shot to it which put down 429/499 to the wheels

monster is getting ready to have a sale. they have had some problems but you will find that with every clutch. but their reviews that are good seem like the people are very satisfied. i think thats what im gonna end up with.
