Jeep motor swap?

So, this guy I know has a 1991 Wrangler just sitting at his shop. Someone just left it there...it's a roller with no motor or trans. Truck is clean with no rust or anything. I can take it off his hands for cheap, and I was wondering what I should do with it...drop a 4.0 and a 5 speed? Or go with a Chevy V8 swap? It would be a new project and i'm just looking at some ideas. So feel free to tell me what you think. (getting pics soon, went to go look at it last night in the dark)

No one swaps those LS1 engines into much of anything, would be original.

If the rest of the truck is clean, maybe you could get a used 4.0 and trans, and make a couple bucks on it

Miles 11-16-2009 04:14 PM

yeah, or have a nice truck to just ride around in. I was looking at a forum, someone swapped a LT1 into a wrangler, looked pretty good.

The 4.0 / 5spd swap would certainly be the easiest, but plenty of people have dropped small blocks into them without too much trouble.

If I could afford it, I'd be doing a 4BT diesel swap into mine (4cyl version of the 6BT 5.9 Cummins found in Dodge Rams).

Meh, if you're going to go through the trouble of a motor swap that isn't factory I'd swap in a real motor compared to that junk Hemi.

LTb1ow 11-16-2009 04:51 PM

And hence, 4BT! or a yanmar LP !

NastyEllEssWon 11-16-2009 05:37 PM

a guy i know here in nj has a jeep with a hemi from a charger/challenger. said it pretty much bolted right in.

mc73nova 11-16-2009 05:53 PM

The Hemi's suck royaly with gas mileage.

I agree with the other Matt, throw an LS1 in there!

r0nin89 11-16-2009 06:27 PM

Theres plenty of jeeps with LS motors in them. Alot of the tough truck and crawler jeeps are starting to switch over to LS's from small blocks.

As for the diesel discussion. A 4bt although often done is way to heavy for the front of a jeep, especially a wrangler. Take a look at small import isuzu v6 turbo diesels like 3.2 or 3.4L I believe.

But yes 4bts are sweet. I thought of putting one in my 87 flatbed trail rig.

gotmudnj 11-16-2009 08:35 PM

If you stay with a jeep motor get the 4.0 l 6 speed manual if u can unless your looking to wheel. Chevy swaps easy they actually make bellhousing for chevy
motors to built up to jeeps trans looked into it
myself. It all depends on what you plan to do with jeep exactly.

Miles 11-16-2009 08:37 PM

haha yeah i've seen the diesel swap on some forums. And the title is in the mail, but who knows how long that is going to take. But, the sale of my impala is pending, so i'm in no rush to start another thing just yet anyways

Miles 11-16-2009 08:44 PM

yeah i wasn't lookin to do some crazy wheeling. I was only looking for a decent lift, put it up on 35s. just have something to have a little fun with.

If it were me, there wouldn't be a question as I already have a Chevy drivetrain just waiting to be dropped into a YJ someday.

The axles under a jeep wont hold up to 35's let alone 35s and a 350.

Jeeps got 30/35 danas in it stock. Front is good to about 33in tires, 35s would take chromo shafts to be safe and not have to worry about. The rear is garbage, dana 35s have been known to pop shafts with 32in tires on them. I would strongly advise an 8.8 swap. Very simple, cheap, and cost affective.

Either way I definitely wouldnt go dropping in a v8 without having a dana 44 front axle and something beefier in the back like a built 8.8, or a 9in.
