Eaton Posi toast, Replacement options?
So I blew put my eaton posi in my 12 bolt, Im pretty sure its the clutches and not the spiders in it. Now I plan on spraying it with a 100 shot, I can rebuild the posi with new clutches and springs, but what are the chances Im going to kill it again? I race the car alot and Im now on a slick. I was thinking of putting in a spool because they are cheap, but Im pretty sure I would hate it on the street. Mt next options are a Detroit True Track, or Detroit Locker. Any suggestions? Replace the eaton or rebuild it?

The spool will definitely be quicker at the track but like you said, be tougher on the street. I have a true trac now and I'm not a huge fan of it. It hasn't let me down yet but I feel it slip sometimes. I've only gone mid 1.6s on it so I'm not hitting it too hard. I was looking at replacing it with a detroit locker when it does go.

What spline are you running now? Have you looked to see if they are starting to twist?

If I do rebuild can I throw 400 or 800 lbs springs and the all steel shim packs in there and be ok?

I had a locker for years and it took some getting used to......but i really liked it. I say just man up n put a spool in it. Several of us run it on the street and its really not bad. I've driven 700 miles since i switched to a spool in my fab 9. I daily drove it to break the motor in (hammonton to cherry hill) for a week and barely noticed it. Its less expensive not to mention lighter.
Ask barney mobile about how his detroit locker feels. He s had one in his ss for years......daily drives it.....and ran 9.7 @ 141 without hurting the locker. Can't argue with results like his |
FWIW I've heard some bad **** about the TruTrac as of late. Like internal failures on low mileage units.
I'd say either locker or posi, depending on how much you really plan on hitting the strip. If you go posi with the red springs be aware that Eaton has some special notes about which clutches you should run. I think only the steel ones make the grade. Either way, check with a rear end guy. |
I was gonna call toms differentials nd see what he recommends from what ive been reading hes the giy to talk to about eatons

I had a spool in my 96 trans am. With 315s it sucked on the street but with a less narrow tire it wasn't bad at all. You just have to drive as if your pulling a trailer around corners haha

How much do you actually drive your car on the street?

Looks like Im buying another eaton, Thanks, Tim.

And after you break another you'll put a locker or spool in it like we did...............

Spool on the street here, just have to know what you can and can't do. I've got a Detroit locker with less then 1000miles on it but its for 33 spline.
