Chassis coating Por15 questions
So I'm going to be taking my 01 apart soon for a motor swap and while I had the trans out I wanted to coat the floor pans with something to prevent rust. They're starting to get some surface rust around the edges and I want to keep on top of it as I plan on keeping the car. I know por15 is the most talked about but I hear that it doesn't stick to non-rusty surfaces well. I know por15 is not UV resistant and will need a top coat. Anyone have any experience with it, or another product recommendation, or something better for not rusted panels?

No matter how well I've prepped a surface, I've never had good luck with POR15.
I swapped motors in my truck recently and painted the frame with rustoleum. We'll see how it holds up but I heard it does well. |
UV doesn't matter underst the car. It does not like smooth or painted met as l

Ok so por15 only on the surfaces with rust popping thru...any suggestions on what to paint the rest with?

Anyone have any experience with Eastwood products?

Only thing POR15 stuck to was my skin.

POR 15 has worked well for me but only on really rough surfaces. It REALLY needs tooth to work well. Was/is great on a fresh sandblasted surface but it's also come off in big flakes on floor pans. |
Not really willing to spray, dont have a compressor and dont want to make a mess in my dad's shop. Anyone have any experience with rust bullet? From what I've read it seems most likely to adhere to both painted and rusty surfaces and is also silver so the finish might be close to the underside if my car.

Seems like possible overkill but it's how you'll get a solid coating. |
https://www.kbs-coatings.com/ cheaper than POR15 works just as well. hit all surfaces with 80 grit and apply as recommended.

I sanded almost the whole side of my Underbody down to bare metal with wire wheels, scrapers, sandpaper, etc back in 2010. It took me a few dozen hours but I did it
I drove to a POR-15 headquarters which was in Whippany NJ and spent a while talking to them and seeing products. While their product is primarily made to be painted over rust, if you use their marine clean and then the special metal ready spray and procedures and apply the por15 to a bare surface.... IT WILL WORK . the guy at their sho was showing me tons of samples. he showed me POR painted directly onto bare clean metal. even painted onto pieces of round pipe. then he banged those pipes together and the paint didn't chip or marr or break off at all. My underside is in pristine condition anywhere I put the POr15. I have not have had one since scratch, flake, peeling, or anything like it. It is still black but has a slight brownish hue to it Very slight. Go on my website and I have photos and description https://iroczman15.m.webs.com/site/m...etwork=fw#3030 Also some recent photos of my underside as of March 2018 are on one of my threads on here where I had the while trans, driveshaft, exhaust, rear axle, fuel tank, exhaust out of the car. I can’t explain why the other people had issues with their POR15 application but I can assure you that I did not. My car gets used and often it gets used hard. But I take time to get under there often and give things a wipe down pretty often. If it had flaked or peeled or acted weird anywhere I would notice it and admit it on here. It’s 100% intact and awesome after 8 years |
