305 stroker question
 

hey guys,
I am new to the forum and have a '88 formula w/tpi 305. I have been toying with the idea of building a 335 or 340 stroker. I am interested to know if anyone here has ever built one or knows anyone who has. I am interested in costs involved, if my block with 120,000 miles on it is usable
with good machine shop prep or should a new block be purchased. I am
just looking into how nuts it is to build a 305 instead of just doing a 350. I am not looking for the most power just a reliable different mill. Thanks in advance for any replies and thanks for having this great forum for us Jersey F-Body nuts!

honestly, the storker kits aren't worth doing on a 305.
you will have to do the same amount of machine work as rebuilding a 350, plus you would have to add teh cost of the crank to teh mix.
some of teh guys on thirdgen.org did the stroker kits and spent 3-4k on the rebuild, you can buy a gm performance parts 350 short block with a warranty for under 1500.
it is a novel idea, and certainly would stand out. but it jsut doesn't seem to pan out dollar per hp wise.

Technically, Max stroke is to 334 right?

*EDIT* I had the same idea with my '86 305. Too costly. I would rather stroke a junkyard 350 than a 305, due to financials. Too expensive to do a 305.

I'm looking into it and it is a bit pricey, something to consider about the GM crate engines are they are pre-86 style blocks, 2 piece rear seals and you need to modify newer intake manifolds to go on it if you want to keep the stock injection style. Not a big deal but something to think about. Stay away from the 340 kit, it requires alot of block clearancing. The 335 kit also needs clearancing but not as much. Personally I would look for a 87 and newer 350 truck block or engine on Ebay or something and tear it down. You can get a whole motor for about $500. I am only considering a 335 because I have access to alot of the tools to do my own machinework, I wouldn't suggest it over a 350 for cost effectiveness but it would be cool to have!

You'd wish you built a 350 or 383... in the long run they'd probably cost about the same or cheaper AND give you more power.

I think the 335 would make plenty of power for a street car, if you are looking for all out brute force there is still no replacement for displacement. Decide what you want. Anything over 400HP can start being a pain on the street (and in the wallet!). If all out is your plan go for the bigger motor.

thanks everyone for your replies. I have been doing research also and the cost just does not justify doing the work. I am not looking for anything over 400 HP for sure. I just want a car I can drive a couple days a week and go to Island on Friday nites and run somewhere in the 13's.
I am thinking a 383 or stout L98 is the way to go. Once again thanks for all the replies. If anyone is in the Lake Hopatcong area and goes to the track by themselves let me know, I am always looking to go with someone.

eh 335s can be pretty peppy...a guy on a few boards i belong to has a 335, stock heads and intake...with an open cutout he made some decent power, very decent torque...and ran a 13.4@98 somethin...1.7 60'...he did it on hoosier QTPs, 2.73 gears, stock converter with a slipping tranny, and pretty stock suspension. not bad at all. his car wasnt tuned yet either.
