$350...is it worth YOUR life???

OK, I towed this guys box van that he drives for work. he illegally parked it next to the Hilton Casino/Hotel and went inside to gamble. as I'm heading down RT322/40 (where the impound yard is) a car pulls along side us beeps and tells me its his truck. at that point in time the tow was $350. he started crying hysterically and saying hes got a lot of problems in really broken English. so I told him to get in the truck and finished towing it to the office/yard and made him go inside where I was on camera/audio so the insanity was documented. the guy starts telling me about how he sold all of his jewelry to get money to gamble so he could try to win $700 to sent to the Dominican republic so his daughter there could be treated for an illness so she didn't die. I told him that he had to pay or call his boss to pay he said he has no money and his boss will fire him. at that point I told him that there's nothing I can do and he has to either call his boss to come pay, pay, or call a cab and leave. so he went out jumped in front of a moving car and laid down in the highway trying to get run over. I had the other guy use the tow truck to block him from getting hit called the cops, and 3 patrolmen a supervisor and and ambulance showed up. then another 2 patrolmen...then they took him too the AC psych ward for mental evaluation. when the owner of the truck came for it a few hours later I found out the guy has no daughter...he's a gambling addict. I love being able to read a lie but GOD DAMN. the guy really tried to kill himself to push a lie...

$350 would get me a lot of good booze, a tank of gas, and some cake.

I'd be happy.

bubba428 10-19-2009 10:36 AM

$350 would get me the rest or the down payment for a truck I'm trying to get

X2, that's exactly what I was thinking. When my brother was at Trenton State (AKA TCNJ) one of his friends got tied up with a loan shark who threatened to break his legs if he didn't pay up. My brother loaned him the $$ to pay the shark and the kid paid off my brother over the course of a few months. That kid would still go and gamble in AC even though he owed my brother $2500. I guess it can be a pretty serious addiction.

if i found out someone was pissing money away when theyre supposed to be clearing their debt with me first, the loanshark wouldve been the least of their worries

business is business...thats his job...if someone came into autozone begging you for a free alternator so they can get to a job interview and make the money to pay you back for the alternator would you risk your job to help them out???? nope.

sounds like you handled it pretty professionally to me.

BigAls87Z28 10-19-2009 12:36 PM

I was being sarcastic.
Where I live, there are lot of "needy" people that want stuff for free.
By needy, I mean crack heads.

I'm with ya there! I don't know how my brother handled it; I would've flipped for sure.

sweetbmxrider 10-19-2009 05:19 PM

if you needed $350 to live, sure.

91chevywt 10-19-2009 07:04 PM

As sad as it is, he probably would have been better off if someone rolled over him

transmaro93 10-19-2009 07:07 PM

haha i love stories like this... good for you man that you didnt give in... im sure your not a heartless jerk, but people think they can play on peoples emotions like that... awsome!

WildBillyT 10-19-2009 08:44 PM

Heartless? Nah. I think in his business he builds up a pretty good BS detector. People probably give sob stories just about every time they get towed. Good job Bubba.

Jensend 10-19-2009 09:18 PM

Serious compulsive gamblers are very sad and unbalanced people. The need for "action" is stronger for these people than virtually any other need. This includes food , family, sex, or their physical health. I've met people first hand who have lost jobs, homes, cars, families and still couldn't break their dependence on the "thrill" of the risk taking that makes gambling exciting.

I personally know someone who earned 30K annually that lost 70K betting on the NIT in one weekend. Same person travelled 150 miles on New Years Day to "generate action" with a fellow gambler since most normal betting outlets were dead on New Years. The two sat at a rest stop and placed bets with each other on everything from the number of Yellow M&Ms in a box from a vending machine to the time it took a random person to walk into and out of a restroom. If it had not been for the intervention of GA (Gamblers Ananymous) this person would have probably had to deal with some serious pain from the people he placed bets with. Bookies and loan sharks usually don't kill welchers, too hard to get paid from a corpse.

Sounds like you ran into a compulsive gambler that had reached a crisis. Think you're lucky his mania and desperation was directed at himself. There's no predicting what people will do in those extremes. Be glad our obsession is with cars.

90% of the people that get towed are simply trying to beat the system and not pay for parking the other 10% are oblivious to signs. so when they find out the it costs $100-$500(depending on the GVWR and applicable fees ei. dollies, go-jacks, use of 2 trucks, vehicle with trailor) when the parking fee was $5, of course they lie and try to get out of it. I had another guy tell me his wallet was stolen from his truck and tried to blame me. in the end he had his wallet and the cash in his pocket. they park on a businesses property taking up space where people who will patronize that business would park or pay to park essentially stealing money from the business. and when they get towed for such I'M the bad guy...as far as that nut job he's in the hospital, where he needs to be, getting evaluated

just for clarity I do private property NOT towing from the street. I can only tow from the steet when Ventnor City police ticket and call for the tow. NO PD tows in AC, unless its a break down then 90% of the police recommend us to the customer.

I think the towing job's made Bubba smarter  look out world!

bubba428 10-20-2009 09:06 AM

no i was just actually awake at that point and actually re-read what i typed before i posted it.

Even though I'm a bastard tow truck operator, I still have to deal with people in a professional manor. Having been doing it for the amount of time I have, its second nature to go back into that when I'm talking about the job. Especially when a slight miss-understanding or poorly worded sentence can give people grounds to sue. Also doing this job makes going out and picking up girls so much easier. No matter how pissed she is its just another day in the life.....

I think so

I still hate tow trucks and parking ticket people...

bubba428 10-20-2009 10:36 AM

I don't write tickets. That's police towing. I only deal with service calls (broken down cars) and vehicles parked on private property (anything not owned by the city).

I take it back, you have not improved. I said AND, which means I was not talking about you. It's just a separate dislike for parking ticket people.

bubba428 10-20-2009 10:47 AM

I know. I just didn't acknowledge the tow truck part. I just wanted to make sure that other people don't mistake me for the meter bitch.
