GTO gauge cluster mod
A while back, I found out on the GTO forums that the gauge cluster had been "hacked" and could easily be modded. Mods included changing the start-up logos, adding custom text upon shutdown, activating the factory shiftlight, changing shift rpms, disabling the DRLs, re-calibrating the speedo, and some other stuff.
Since I've decided to do a Holden conversion with my GTO, the cluster was one of the items that needed to be addressed. I'll be purchasing a custom cluster face with the "GTO" logo replaced by the proper "monaro" script. However, it would still say "pontiac" at start up without this cluster mod. The software for the cluster is available on most if not all GTO forums and you can purchase the necessary cable for about $65, or you can build you own cable for less than $15. I made my own and the cost was $11.51. Then I just had to download the drivers for the chip in the usb plug, and run the program. Actually making the changes to the cluster only took a minute or two. I changed my startup logo, adjusted my speedo(2004's have a 3% error), turned off my DRLs completely, and dimmed the "mph" on the speedo. Once I change the clutch, I'm going to play around with the factory shift light. Here's the before picture, the cable I made, and the final product... https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4675/...6954b8ea_c.jpg https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4654/...b9aa23f9_c.jpg https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4649/...05801df2_c.jpg https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4770/...c19ec197_c.jpg https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4716/...28270020_c.jpg This will be the new cluster face, in Pearl Blue, with "Monaro" like on the black gauges below. https://www.blackcatcustom.com/images/GTO%20Pblue1.jpg https://www.blackcatcustom.com/custo...0Black_jpg.jpg |
Very cool. Love cheap mods like this.

Lookin good!!

The cable and another free software program also allows me to diagnose and reset the airbag light without needing a tech2 tool.

All this for the price of lunch? So worth it. Good stuff, Paul!

That's real cool

Been just over two years... Finally got around to swapping the cluster face. With life getting in the way, everything took a lot longer but the entire Monaro conversion is almost complete. Tonight I went over to my in-laws garage where my car has been sitting for the past few months and I pulled the cluster out and installed the new face. Tomorrow I'll go back and put it back in place so I can reinstall the needles. Then I can button it all up. I should have done this much sooner, so easy. If you look closely, you'll see the font is different but the new face is actually made with the 05-06 ls2 gto cluster font. Also, there's no red markings at the high range of the gauges. The manufacturer said they had issues with the red add-ons with the pearl style so no big deal. I'll post another pic once finally installed and powered up.

All done and installed. Cant wait to drive the car in the daytime to see how it really looks. One surprise was that the red from the max ranges is actually there and shows up when the backlights are on. Perhaps the face was printed in the wrong order? Either way, doesn't really bother me since I usually drive with at least my running lights on and when off, it looks clean with only the black blue and silver.

It does look clean when off. I bet that will pop in the daylight, too. Nice progress
