87 cluster vs 91 cluster

hey guys as many of u know i did a swap from 87 irocz to a 91 rs v8...will the 91 cluster work with 87 wiring and set up even tho it reads 110 on the speed and the 87 read 145

//<86TA>\\ 06-16-2008 08:56 PM

IIRC the 91 is an electric speedo and the 87 is cable driven.

Slo86Bird 06-16-2008 10:13 PM

on my 86 bird, i used a 91 cluster and the 86 had a 85mph speedo and the 91 had a 120 mph speedo and it swapped riteout and the speedo works as it should but thats a bird, idk about Camaros.

So, you were able to put the '91 cluster in an '87?

Kid Racer 06-19-2008 11:33 AM

no the 87 went into a 91...

Tru2Chevy 06-19-2008 10:34 PM

Did you swap the whole dash, or did you just ghetto-fab the old cluster into the 91 dash?

If possible I want to use a '91-'92 style dash, but keep the '89 cluster to avoid the hassle of the electonic cluster.

Rich2279 06-26-2008 10:49 PM

Picked up a '91 dash yesterday. Removed my '89 dash today.

V 06-28-2008 06:18 PM

im putting a 89 dash in my 85 which is all getting swapped into the 89 body

Batman 06-28-2008 06:22 PM

Ummmmm wasn't the 89 dash electronic, or are you talking digital? I know mine was. Pretty sure the 91-92 dash is unique though

V 06-28-2008 06:46 PM

91-92 camaros were electronic
86-92 birds were electronic

Yes, the '91-'92 Camaro dash is unique and different from the '89 Camaro. My '89 has the cable speedometer. I like the updated style of the '91-'92 dash, but I have to sort out the electronic speedometer.

you need a buffer box out of a 86-90 bird, it a yellow box with a bunch of wires and then you need the VSS. dont bother looking for a buffer box in a 91-92, they are incorporated inside the ecms on those.

Batman 06-29-2008 10:38 AM

I have an 89 buffer box if you want it, car is about to get junked so speak now.

Rich2279 06-29-2008 11:38 AM

This is behind the gauges or under the dash in the Firebirds? The local yard has several Firebirds so hopefully I can locate one.

Yup, and bright yellow. about 1/2" to 3/4" tall. just a small circuit board inside.

There is a yellow box on this '90-'92 Camaro dash that I picked up @ the junk yard. Not sure what it is for. It's on the driver's side.

i'm gonna say thats for the airbag. 90-92 were speed density TPI systems that ran off the 730 ecm, the 3.1v6 also used the 730 just with a different chip. those car had the buffer in the 730, so i am almost positive the didnt have the part u need.

Batman 06-30-2008 08:00 PM

The sensor is under the lower dash panel on the passenger side, right near the PCM
