radar detector suggestions

im looking to get myself a pretty decent radar detector for my car. i havent had one in a few years and figured it couldnt hurt to have a little extra warning with speed traps and cops. so what are a few good options with them and which are good brands? also let me know which ones you guys are running and if there good or bad.

Beltronic and Escort have worked very well for me. I currently use a Beltronic Vector 955 and it always gives me enough notice to slow it down before I see them, just gotta make sure you leave the X band on, alot of State troopers use X and most of the highway settings for most radar detectors shut off X. Stay away from Cobra.

Go on eBay and look up Escort SOLO. There are several models starting around $50.00 used. They use either 4 or 2 AA batteries and I have used them for several years with excellent results. I get the visor clip and mount it on the passenger side sun visor and you can't even see it from the outside and because it is battery powered, there is no power cord to hang down.

Eat your carrots, good eye sight and a light foot work wonders. 7 years no radar detector, one ticket.

v1...

LTb1ow 05-10-2009 07:34 PM

Beltronic 940.

Actually just threw it back up on the windshield last night...

BonzoHansen 05-10-2009 09:45 PM

I stopped using one because I just slowed down and got smart. But I loved my Valentine One.

nothing beats a valentine...

are there any radar jammers that actually work?

that'll get you ticketed and arrested faster then speeding...

Formulalt1 05-10-2009 11:39 PM

Laser jamming is legal (as far as I know), radar jamming is illegal.

Edit- My bad, they are both illegal but there are some really cool kits out there but if you have a quality radar detector and don't normally drive 100MPH you should have enough time to slow down before you get clocked (this is ofcourse unless they get you with a laser gun, if they do you are snagged if you where speeding cause this wouldn't go off til they actually clocked you)

Edit 2- Actually after reading this, it states that radar and laser jammers are legal in this state so I am not sure http://www.radarbusters.com/legalissuesarticle.cfm

"Laser Jammers and Radar Jammers are illegal in the states of Nebraska, Minnesota, Utah, California, Oklahoma, Virginia, Colorado, Illinois and Washington DC. "

^ Not if you radar detector is also good at detecting lasar. ;)

And lasar is finicky at best, can't be used in bad weather etc. and most places around me at least cannot afford/do not want it.

If you are going down a side road or getting off a exit and they are using Laser, the only way to detect before they have your speed is if there is a car infront of you or they pull the trigger it way too quickly otherwise it will just go off once it hits your car and even the quickest notifaction is too late. Laser is not that commenly used but alot of high traffic spots use it. I have personally seen it used in all types of weather conditions at the Throgs Neck bridge.

only passive radar jamers are legal... but they dont do anything

active ones work but you will get arrested since they send out a radio frequency they are illegal and you will get caught

this, except i had an escort passport because i couldn't afford a valentine. unfortunately, cops now use laser which makes it IMPOSSIBLE to detect until you are already caught. i don't even use my passport anymore, it is in my garage somewhere.

Been using a Beltronic Vector 955 for about a year. It usually goes off well before I can see the cop, plenty of warning time.

Now if only Phila. police used radar, maybe I woudln't have gotten that ticket last week :(

regular 8500 that i bought in 2003

mtg6486 05-13-2009 09:13 PM

i think i might go with the v1

FlyingDutchman 05-18-2009 09:53 PM

are calibre radar systems with k40 any good? they look pretty professional and they are "Faster than a Speeding Ticket. Guaranteed!"

anyone know about em?

unstable bob gable 05-24-2009 08:06 PM

I've been happy with my V1 over the years.

KirkEvil 05-26-2009 05:16 PM

I was initially against the v1 because of the price tag. I just figured it couldnt be that much better than a mid range detector.

I got a v1 as a gift 7 months ago, and I have nothing but good things to say about it. I would have bought one a while ago if I knew, especially since its the same price as digging you way out of points.

I mounted it above the rear view mirror and wired it to start up with the car. It cant be seen from the outside of the car, and you must be as low as an f-body to see it from behind at night.

conclusion: get a v1.

1998chevycamaroz28 05-28-2009 08:30 AM

Bump for the V1...worth every penny...and if you look on craigslist.org, you can probobly find a used one, even the older models, 1.7 (1.8 is the current one) is still great...i got the 1.7 version off craigslist about a year and a half ago for $200 and it works amazing...and if you really want to update it when new things come out, you can go on valentines website, put in the Serial Number and it will tell you when can be updated and how much it will cost...

Conclusion: Dont buy a radar detector unless its the V1...nothing else is as good

EODMonkey 05-28-2009 09:49 AM

the v1 and the 85/9500 passports are the tops in radar/laser detection. passport also puts out allaser jammer kit. laser is more rare since lst i heard only state troopers are allowed to use them. radar jammers break fcc regs so they're illegal. however should you decide to build one the most common is a white noise style jammer that pegs the radar at 200mph. that works well with x band but since the others work on a doppler shift so you would have to find the sending freq and resend it etc, becomes quite involved. then theres powering it with enough juice to have a range etc etc. remember no radar protects against instant on, but the v1 and 9500 both have POP protection and since standoff is key, they have a hell of a range

LTb1ow 05-28-2009 10:06 AM

Yea, and or find a way to shield yourself for irradiating your balls... The doppler shift one wouldn't be too hard, as long as you could find the model radar guns each town uses and have a way to very your frequency, it could be down. But again, blow past a cop and he gets a bunch of jibberish....
