Question about Gears
Im going to be rebudling my 12 bolt very soon because its is howling pretty badly. Now I have a question on gears. In jegs and summit they have listed comp gears ans street gears.....which ones should I go with? I dont take the car down the track very often, but I am adding an sts turbo kit. Suggestions?

comp gears (drag racing gears) are made of a softer compound of metal, to prevent from shearing teeth off ( made to absorb high rpm launches ) and short term running. they are NOT made to withstand highway driving and such which will produce higher temps and running those temps for long periods of time.
the street gears are are composed of a harder metal, which will withstand those long period of high temperatures. if you drive your car on the street....buy the street gears. period!!! |

If they don't have gears for you, than use Richmonds as for series carrier...what gears do you have in it now? |
It has 4.11's in it now
|
4 series

Ok thanks, what install kit do you prefer? I was thinking if getting Richmonds kit that dosent include the axle bearings because I dint have c-clips it uses a 9" axle bearing.

I've always heard good things about motive. Richmond's tend to be on the noisy side. Yukon is also another good option

I've had two Richmond sets (9" and 8.5" 10) and worked on 3 others (GM 12, Vette 12x2) and none of them have made noise. |
well....only noisy gears I've ever seen are broken or improperly shimmed ones...lol
Rumor has it that Richmond tend to be a lil noisy, but I've never personally had a noisy set. And like W.B. said, 10bolts are the rumored "noisy ones". Motive is an excellant gear set. Richmond would be 2nd. choice. (only cause I've broken less motives than richmonds) don't ask me how I know his...lol... repeated 6k launches on a 10bolt w/a M6 for 2yrs..about a dozen diffs & gear changes later..but I did accomplish a 1.41 60ft 10.20 pass |
Ordered Motive 4.11 street gears, and richmonds install kit. Thanks for the help S.J.Sleeper! Now I just gotta find someone to rebuild it :(
