Help needed ...Car won't turn off?

Today I pulled into my driveway turned the key off pulled it out, and the car didn't miss a beat. I re-inserted the key moved between on and off positions..nothing. Pulled ignition fuse to stop the engine. Then had to take the ground off to get the rest of the electrical turned off,...also just noticed as I got out a metal pin and some plastic piece on the floor? Any ideas? Had this car throw a fit last year and refuse to start.Had to go to a Chevy dealer in little falls, paid an arm and a leg for an ignition cylinder and the labor to have it installed so It'd be a bitch if that was it again...any help would be great

I would call the dealer and see what they will do. Folks can correct me if I am wrong but I believe components are covered under a year warranty, not sure about the labor.

If the lock cylinder is moving (its not the actual electrical switch) and nothing is binding, I would say you trashed the ignition switch.

The picture you posted is one of the two tilt pins and the odd shaped one is for the high beams. When the tilt pin comes out you'll get too much play in the column and the ignition rack will not work the linkage its supposed to connect to which is why you can't turn your car off. The high beam piece also falls out fairly easily whenever there is play on the left side of the column.

Thanks for the responses so far, I plan on calling the dealer when I get home, but I have a feeling I may be a month or so over the year but I'll give it a shot. Is the ignition switch in the cylinder that was replaced or somewhere's else in the column? Anyone know where those pieces in the picture came from?

The pieces in your picture are #21 and 39. The cylinder turns number 47 which engages the rack number 44 and that works the linkage number 76 that hooks to your ignition switch.

You have to disassemble most of the column to replace them. If you do it yourself I would replace the tilt pins, they tend to wear out and cause excessive play in the wheel or they fall out and cause the problem your having now.

Great! thanks for all the info. Hopefully I can get this done without breaking everything else in there lol... Is there a book or a manual that you think may be of assistance? That exploded view made it a little more intimidating haha Thanks

Columns were the same general design on alot of GM cars through the 80's and 90's so any type of instructions you can find on the net should give you a general idea. You'll need a steering wheel puller, snap ring pliers, column lock spring compressor and there is a special tool to remove the tilt pins (which you could probably do without) along with general hand tools.

That looks like a fun job. Just make sure to use baggies, lots of labels and take pictures for reference as you go along.

Thanks for all the tips, anyone know of a garage that maybe owned by a Camaro guy/board member that'd take on the job? It's starting to look like something I'd personally do more harm than good with. Hate to go to the stealership...thanks again
