No hacks!

The issue that started early this morning and kept us down for several hours had to do with a change I made to the server firewall yesterday afternoon. We are getting dozens of spam signups a day, and Bonzo, WBT, and I are going nuts trying to keep up (as we personally approve every account before they have the ability to post - keeping the incidences of spam VERY low here).

Turns out that the way I went about attempting to block all registrations coming from certain countries was far more server intensive than I thought, and the firewall software was struggling to keep up, so after talking to the support team at our webhost I backed out the changes I made yesterday and am coming up with a new plan to keep the crazy spammers out.

We're still allowed here though, right?

LTb1ow 03-26-2013 07:17 AM

Make more mods. Jerseymike seems legit.

We use a random question that you must answer correctly.

This AM I changed it to something more difficult for a non-US citizen to get as they would have to look it up.

The standard captcha images don't hold up well against bots anymore.

Only admins can moderate new users. And do you really want more staff running around here with a ban stick watching you?

Yes, there is a random question that you must read and type the answer in for, and before that there are 4 pictures displayed and you have to select the photo that it asks for.
