Car bogs at the 1000' marker

My car has been sitting for 2 years. I changed the plus and oil, etc. Drained the gas and replaced the fuel filter. Car pulls to 6500 in first and second. At the 1000' it seems to stumble at 5 grand. Takes a deep breath pulls a just a little then boggs again. I ran 12.50 @ 108mph. Should of been 12.0 at 113-115mph. I'm thinking fuel pump.

What kind of car... Mods... ect...

1995 Formula Firebird. 383 lt1, crowler bottom end , 4 bolt mains, joe o custom cam, rapid motorsports stage 2 heads, ported intake, BMR throttle body, hooker headers, stock opti crap, syclone in tank fuel pump, turbo400 reverse manual valve body with t brake, 4.11 moser 12 bolt, 31 spline axles with a spool, full supension mods, 8 point bar, 4" skinnies on front, QTP 10.5 X15 on the rear, major weight reductions no ac, bumper supports, radio, factory seats, etc, car is a tin can. PB is 11.20@121. I short shift to run 12.0's. Point is that the car ran fine last time out which was 2 years ago. Can a fuel pump go bad from sitting???

Only way to check if it is the fuel pump is with a fuel gauge under load your pressure would be dropping off. Could also be the fuel injectors if they sit too long can they can get nasty. Try running some fuel injector cleaner if you haven't already.

Of course not. The fuel is from 2 years aga (pre-ethonol) so its not as crappy as todays pump fuel. I spent a week getting the scooter to run after sitting over this winter. I will be adding sabil in everthing this year.

Weird thing is that the car launches ok and pulls fine thru first and second. On the first 2 passes I short shifted at 5500 for the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts. Car bogged at the top at 5000 in third. I took another time shot and was able to shift at 6400 for both 1-2 and 2-3 but once again bogged at the same spot on the top end (1000' marker).

I'm going to buy a cheap pep boys fuel gauge, tape it to the windshield and make a pass. Downside is that I need to go to the track and make a full pass to test it out.

I agree with fuel injector cleaner. I had issues and Redline brand seems to work very well.

Also check the simple stuff like air filter, is the alternator putting out constant voltage, no belt slip? Check your connections for ignition and opti harness too.

High gear is putting max load on the engine longer then in the lower gears so it cold be something simple.

If it does it next time you make a pass womp it and see if it hangs or pulls through it!

AND, YOU SHOULD KNOW BETTER! It's really not a good idea to leave the car sit that long... battery can go dead, tires go flat, gas gets old, critters make it a home. What you REALLY should do is leave the car at my house and I'll take it over to the track every week or so?

Are you coming up the the $1,000 street car race?

kazman 07-17-2010 09:05 AM

I may have an issue with the fuel pressure regulator. Pressure at idle is 75lbs. Going to put it on the dyno and hook the laptop to see just what is happening.

I may miss the $1000 street race. Have a "family" thing scheduled. Will be racing the Mustang at Numidia tomorrow in the King of the Track event.
