Engine Work Price Quote

The 3800 in my 01 firebird recently crapped out on me and I'd like to put a new engine in it but it seems that not a lot of people like to do engine swaps on f-bodies and when they will do it, its horrendously expensive.

I talked to a shop here in town and they said they would do it but they want around $5,100 (~$2,500 for the engine and around the same for labor). I was wondering if anyone on here would be willing to do it for less or if you know someone that could.

Junk yards are your friends. I blew my motor in my 98 V6 firebird and purchased a motor from a junk yard for 450.00. the motor had 8k miles on it.. It was complete from intake to oil pan with all the accessories.. That was in Virginia I dont know were in NJ the good Junk yards are. Check Ebay for motors also.. The 3800 can be found for as little as 100.00..

Are you looking for a rebuild or a swap as in move to a V8?

Brando56894 06-09-2009 03:42 PM

im looking for the cheapest solution

Id love to put an LS1 in there but I definitely dont have the money for it and wouldnt i have to change everything over to swap in a v8? in my eyes its kind of dumb to spend 4-5 grand just to put another v6 in there but i want to keep the car since theres nothing wrong with it other then the engine is shot.

i just got another quote from a guy in bridgeton and his price was about $4800 to put in a rebuilt jasper 3800. I wouldnt mind putting a used engine in there that had 60,000+ miles on it as long as it wasnt ridiculously expensive and nothing was wrong with it. If I cant find anything cheaper than 4 grand ill start looking in junk yards and on ebay for used engines. if nothing comes from that i guess ill just sell her whole even though i really dont want to...

Yea swapping a LS1 in would be costly, you would have to change everything. And I wouldnt pay anywhere near what your getting quoted for a 3800.

Brando56894 06-09-2009 07:20 PM

yea the price is a little ridiculous, but than again its a reman'd engine with a three year warranty...

NastyEllEssWon 06-09-2009 07:52 PM

thats crazy. save the 5k, go buy another nice running v6 car and use your blown motor one as a parts car for the future

NastyEllEssWon 06-09-2009 08:30 PM

for 4 or 5 grand you could easily find a nice lt1 car. that's what i would do if i were in your situation.

i just did this same thing this past summer. I really really regreted it. Mainly because everything else starting taking a ****. But i put in a reman jasper engine for grand total of 4.8k or something like that. 1000 $ labor. the rest was parts that i had them do with the swap. If you dont need a car at this time i would say just save for an 98+ z or ss. There are good prices out there

JL8Jeff 06-09-2009 10:00 PM

Look for a used engine and then drum up some help swapping it out. I wouldn't really want to spend more than $1000 total swapping in another 3800. Converting to an LT1 or LS1 would be cool but might not be the best idea for you right now if you're still in school. Maybe try selling the car with the bad motor on racingjunk.com for someone interested in building a race car. Where is the car located right now?
