basic speaker questions...
im looking to drop a few bucks (well, actually whatever it takes) into some speakers all around in my 87 camaro. right now i have two rear sony speakers, which are loud and get the job done but im a big music buff and would like to hear some type of quality. so i have a few questions..
what are the basic things to look for when on the market for speakers? does anybody recommend a certain type? does your headunit play a major part in deciding what speakers to get also |
Are you going with the stock sizes that were in thirdgens? i suggest you dont and put in components. Fab up some plates for the rear so you can run some component speakers.
|
Don't use the 4x6's and go with component kick panels in the front. Crutchfield's q forms hold 5 1/4" separates last time i checked.
And ditch the oval 6x9's in the rear and go with a 6.5' round speaker setup. |

Don't go getting fancy with q forms and custom speaker plates. Just replace the stock speakers with some good name brand speakers eclipse make great speakers just stay away from any thing at walmart, stay away from sony and jenson. .Perferablly 2 ways, they have built in tweeters and with an aftermarket deck will sound good.Throw in an eq and a small amp for the highs and you got a really clean crisp sounding interior. Add a sub in the rear well and your off to sound heaven.
Hifisoundconnection.com for good deals on decent audio stuff. They have a 18" square Kicker solo x sub that iv wanted for years now just need to save the 1500 to get it! |

If you got a discount then your set, otherwise they take the cheaper stuff from most manufactorer's and throw a huge price tag on it.
Alpine is pretty good, not as good as every one makes it out to be, but those type r subs do sound pretty good in person. I do have to admit they make some of the better headunits iv seen to. Pioneer premier is pretty good stuff too, just stay away from the regular pioneer stuff. If you want to same some dough on install id be more than happy to help you out too. |

Pioneer, Alpine, Eclipse is all good stuff. Jersy why a Solo X woofer? Yeah its gonna be loud, but it's not going to sound very good. I personally wouldn't spend the $1500 on it.. check out DD (Digital Designs) for $1500 you'll get a DD woofer that will sound amazing and be as loud if not louder than that solo x.

You guys dont understand the level of sound I need. I grew up with brothers who had old school onkyo systems with 12" cerwin vega subs in each one of their rooms. Parties almost every time a parent went out when I was young. Regular subs dont cut it. I had 2 15"s in my camaro before daily driving it. Solo x is an asounding sub and its built in 3 separate pieces, which makes it rebuildable in case you blow it.
O and compare regular pioneer stuff to other companys for the same price and their garbage. For the money, at the same price range most other companys wash out pioneer. Premier is a different story. |

To even consider an 18" solo x in a DD is foolish. so you going to get an amp for that 5000watt RMS rating that solo x has? time to upgrade the electrical system then.
|
HAHA I need to get my moor running before I ever think about a bigger system anyway.
|
Lol i always have big hopes to realize i cant afford the first thing i wanted to work on
|
Hell, I've got a 10" JL w1 in my Cherokee and that is plenty for me.

If i remember correctly the solo x weighs some where around 90lbs? That a bit too much for me to put in a DD. Not to mention to build a box with enough bracing and support would add at least another 50lbs between MDF and angle iron. I've seen two of these put into a competition Jimmy and the box was HUGE with enough angle iron to use as SFC's.
|
And it would quite a struggle to get the proper airspace needed for such a big sub in a 3rd gen maro.
|
Iv seen two 12"s retrofitted in the rear seat section of a thirdgen. It could be done for a single 15". Fiberglass is one hell of a substance and can be constructed in custom spaces including whole rear sections of a vehicle.
|
Oh yeah ive had 2 12s and a 15 in my 86. I realize it's kinda stupid now but i had a dog of a 305 anyway so the extra 90lbs didnt bother me. but that 18" with the kind of box it would need could be close if not more than 200lbs. No point in putting so much weight in the car. i suggest a nice DD 10" or Fi 10" something along those lines and that should be enough.

i've got like 2 8's or 10's in truck boxes on my rear deck. i like it
