It took a trip from Portland OR down to AZ and then here to NJ. I have a ZZ3 motor I'm getting ready to put in it and waiting for a Hamilton 772 jet drive to be shipped. It's a 1993 Jetcraft sprint boat.

I've still never seen any of those things for sale.

It's really tough to find one that has paperwork so it can be titled and registered. The prices seem to range from $3500 to $50K depending on what level of racing you're thinking of doing. I'm not racing it so I wanted something with paperwork. It seems like almost every nut and bolt were loose from the trip, especially with no weight of the engine and jet drive.

Is that one of those boats they race on those tracks that are like man made channels? With the quick turning?

Yes, the real race boats run at least 700 hp now to be somewhat competitive. And the boats keep getting shorter and lighter. Most of them run jet drives that have 3 impeller stages.

I love when I catch em on TV, super cool to watch !

sweet rig, looks like it has seen some abuse and wouldn't mind taking more. what do you do with something like this if you dont plan on racing? seems purpose built

Blackbirdws6 04-24-2017 03:44 PM

That is quite a ride! Have fun with it.

def would be a good trolling boat

JL8Jeff 04-24-2017 09:08 PM

They have some serious speed on smooth water. The previous one I had was a 14' sprint boat with a crate 350 making around 225 hp and it would do 60-65 mph with a single impeller jet drive. It's pretty worthless in choppy water, you end up sucking air which is like hitting the brakes.

IROCZman15 04-24-2017 10:05 PM

very cool!
enjoy that

I've seen those things on TV too and they are thrilling to watch.

Progress has been slow with the jet drive taking a month to get delivered and then I needed to replace one of the cutlass bearings and decided to put a stainless impeller in with more pitch. Figuring out the marine specific parts to get and then locating them is more of a challenge than I thought. I just found out my order for the Glenwood straight exhaust risers was backordered for at least 4-5 weeks so I cancelled that order. I finally got the jet drive installed and hopefully sealed up properly, then I was able to install the engine after figuring out which motor mounts to use. The driveshaft h-bar was 1-1/2" short so I had to move the motor back. I still need to figure out the exhaust, get the engine wired, hook up the cooling, route the fuel system and then hope it doesn't leak!

Got it fired up today at the river. I had to run it in the water with the new cutlass bearing in the jet drive. Jegs sent the wrong header muffler inserts so I'm waiting for the right ones and decided to fire it up with the open headers. It's loud!

I heard someone on the river around 4:30-5:30ish. Was that you?

JL8Jeff 06-25-2017 09:28 PM

Not today, yesterday I was at the ramp around that time. I never took the boat off the trailer, I was checking for any potential leaks and wanted to make sure water was pumping though properly.

Finally had a chance to remove the lettering and decals from the boat. That was fun, they've been on there a long time and took a bit of effort to remove.

I actually have the Glenwood water cooled manifolds but I can't get in touch with them to order the straight risers I need. They were originally backordered 6-7 weeks so I'm hoping they are available soon.
