Tire/Wheel combo

I'm in the process of switching over my street/strip car into strictly a drag car and blasting a big shot of nitrous (around 250-300) through it.
(Forged 355, bowl ported heads with 2.02"/1.6" valves, CC503, Holley 670 carb, GMP intake, TDP built T56). The car is being built for test & tune and Friday Night street legal races but my local track is pretty lenient with what they consider a street car... not really looking to fit into any specific class or bracket race.

The car currently has 17" replica C5 Z06 wheels on it with 275/40/17s and I am looking to shed some weight off the front tires with skinnies and running a rear tire with a little more sidewall and better compound.

I'm willing to run whatever size wheel will fit but I can't go much bigger than a 26" tall tire. I have LS1 front brake calipers and rear LCA relocation brackets. Can I clear a 15" or 16" tire and how wide can I go on what backspacing?

15x8 wheel you need 5.5" bs, 15x10 you need 7.5"

Thanks. You wouldn't happen to know if I could fit a 12" wide slick on a 7.5" back spacing, would you?

Regardless of the stock ten bolt not handling the power, is a 12" slick overkill on a 200-250 shot?

a 28x10.5W in a stock fbody wheelwell is very tight. a 12" tireI would say is overkill... What gearing do you have?

LTb1ow 06-29-2014 10:26 PM

Why would you not want a 28 inch tire?

Kinda figured it would be but I'm new to slicks. Car is leaving the line on the full shot all at once if I can make that happen but giving it more thought, since I won't always be spraying it at the track I'm probably better off with the 10" tires.

I can't fit a 28" tire under my car because (unfortunately) somebody lowered the car about 3". I'm looking at the 26.4 x 10 Hoosiers for it. I haven't decided if I want to raise it back to stock height just yet or modify my trailer to make the car fit on it.

Why not run a progressive? 300 hit coming out of the hole will probably shock alot of things.

Also, alot goes into what size tires you need, from trans to rear gear to converter...

Stock springs are prob able to be had for free, thats a horrible deal breaker for not running a proper size tire. IMO of course.

28s will give you much better chance of getting off the line with a large shot.

I have a set of stock springs if needed. I have been trying to sell them for years lol. off my 96ws6. not sure what kind of car we are talking about

zraffz 07-03-2014 05:38 PM

Well it's aftermarket springs/struts about 2" front and rear.
Do they make struts specifically for lowered vehicles or can I possibly get away with just springs?

sweetbmxrider 07-04-2014 08:22 AM

Suspension matters a little bit on a drag car IMO especially with the power level you are at.

zraffz 07-04-2014 12:47 PM

Well I did some research. The struts/shocks that I have are for stock ride height anyway. Coils are cheap enough at $132 shipped for Moog 60114 and Moog CC635.
I'm very happy that I can return the car to stock height. It's a pain trying to get it up onto the trailer or even getting a jack under the car (I have to take the pad off the jack and have my buddy pick up on the fender; to get it onto my lift I have to jack it up first).

Bring it back to stock height and run the proper setup. Get yourself some cheap Competition Engineering 3-way shocks for the back if you don't have a lot of money to play with. I run a 15x10 with a M/T 28x11.5 ET Drag slick. It measures out 12.7in section width. I had to beat the living hell out of my inner fenders but I was able to make them fit

zraffz 07-04-2014 07:51 PM

For now the car has a set of single adjustment KYB struts and shocks... Not my first choice but for the time being I'm leaving them there.

If you want stock springs you can have mine man. Off my 96
