3.42 gears and shift kit

Can anyone recommend a good shift kit to put into a 700-r4 tranny? and i also have limited slip 3.08 geared rear, and thinking about 3.42 gears, can anyone give me some feedback possibly thanks.

Before you ask for gear recommendations, you gotta tell us what your goal is. Is the car your DD? Do you see lots of highway travel? Drag racing?

i see taking it to the track, possibly some street races. maybe a couple of trips to the shore in the summer but not much more highway then that

I would go with 3.73s or 4.10s, depending on how far you plan on taking your mods, and how much you care about going fast at the track. With 3.73s and a stock size tire, you'll be turning about 2565 RPM at 75 mph. With 4.10s it would be 2820 RPM at 75.

4.10s FTW... but I may have a set of 3.42s for sale.

the calc is off but 2850at 75 sounds about right, it may be a touch lower than that but right in the area.

I have 3.42's and it really woke my car up. I had 2.77's before. I was gonna go with a transgo shift kit for my car, but I may not bother and hold out for a T56 swap sometime in the future :-D

What size tire were you running on?

- Justin

project89 04-02-2006 07:47 PM

umm 255 55 zr-16,there really not that tall of a tire, btw cheapo pep boys tach sunpro i think

Tru2Chevy 04-03-2006 10:57 AM

That's a 27" tall tire, as compared to a 25.6" tall tire.

In overdrive, with that gear and tire @ 90 mph you should have been turning approx. 3,575 RPM. Do you have the correct speedo gears in your car for the gears and tire size that you are running? 3100 RPM works out to about 78 mph.

project89 04-03-2006 06:01 PM

yeah we have the right speedo gear,so my tach is off 400 rpm or so

(dam been reving the motor higher then i thought we were)

yea, they were so small I could tap the gas lightly and hear the rpm's rise a bit and not move anywhere lol. Good highway gears, but **** off the line and whipping around town.

You should measure them to see....

- Justin

Teds89IROC 04-06-2006 08:18 AM

What am I measuring to find out?

~Ted

Tru2Chevy 04-06-2006 01:41 PM

Measure the ring gear to see if it's a 7.5" or 8.5"
