NY Times article on Ford and GM

Yeah, I'm a tad worried about the health of Detroit. The problem with them is their cost and weight. We shot ourselves in the foot when we taxed imports based on weight... the Maxima is a perfect example of this. The engineers made the car lighter and gave it a reliable motor and a few nice options... nothing fancy. And with only 190hp it was just as fast as the 220hp Ford SHO but got better milage  .
The big 3 need to get back to basics and reduce their weight. When things are heavy and poorely engineered they put more stess on other parts of the car resulting in a heavy non-reliable vehicle... if only they would look at it this way :( . Another thing they should do is come back with the fiero. Right now I can't think of any mid to low priced mid engine sedan on the market... why not bring back the fiero with an ecotec and then have a sport option with the blower or turbo? Then bring back the camaro and maybe even the bird. I want to see more mid-rear engine vehicles because they're more likely to be rwd :) . |
There is a better chance of the Corvair coming then a Fiero, espcialy now with the Solstice out. Sorry Liz and Phil.
They sold 1k Solstice's in 40 mins. As for heavier American cars, I say they are about teh same weight, if not lighter. American companies suffer the image of shoddy build quality. Image needs to change. Once they figure how do to that, they will gain back customers. |
But think about it, what is the world missing right now? Mid engine vehicles. The Mr2 is gone, Fiero MIA so you're left with only the Porsche boxer to compete with and if it's new the boxer hasn't a chance of retaining it's market without an overhaul. Not to mention if ANYBODY could make a car with bang for the buck it should be the big 3! Only trouble is GM was stuck in the "American's are content with fwd" bs. I don't care if the Buick Park Avenue has more horsepower, it's wrong wheel drive and ugly. It's only 2g's more to get a new Audi A6 with all wheel drive with MORE horsepower and not even 100lbs heavier  . Oh did I forget the resale value? What's happened is this, American cars have lost their touch through years of crappy interiors and quality control issues. Doesn't help that companies like BMW recognize rwd as the true benifit that it is and Audi going awd... what does GM do, they abandon rwd and name a fwd car an Impala... that just blows my mind. It's insulting to say the least. I'm not all that unimpressed with American styling but we don't need more Sedan's, we need more options and more bang for the buck with style. Style they lost and are playing catchup but bang for the buck they're coming back... only problem is they're still a slow moving giant which makes technology take YEARS to be implemented and by that time it isn't even worth it's advantage as being a sales pitch. I think the only way for GM to bet back it's loyalists is to start producing vehicles that just nudge out every other car makers competing model by a smidgen. Don't overdue anything, just tastefully win every catagory for a comparison. With increasing materials costs you'll see lighter American models and with the added displacement it could be some very good years ahead. Al, we'll have to talk about this in person because I need to know a few things about certain inner workings... like wtf Pontiac is doing and Chevy. Caddy's doing everything right but one brand can't keep a company a float. Oh, and can somebody tell me why AWD on an American model tacks on 30% of the initial cost? WTF is up with that?

as much as i would love for the fiero to come back, it wont. if its anything similar, it wont be as cool. besides. they are cooler when there are fewer.
you may resume talking of F-bodies. |
Apparently the market for a mid engine, affordable roadster is slim to none.
And comparing the VERY small numbers of BMW cars sold to just the ONE Impala, not to mention the FWD sedans that round out the top 10 cars sold. Face facts, GM is here to make money, not sports cars. GM needs to make money now more then ever. There is too much going on, or not going on in GM that they cannot just shoot from the hip. GM needs to do this. They need to cut down on middle management. Speed up development and start using people from around the world and work as a UNIT!! Engineers in Germany should be talking to designers in Austrailia and product mangers in America. Allow the engineers and designers to do the talking, not the bean counters. Spend a few bucks here and there, or you will be spending that much on incentives to move the cars when they are released. |
