synthetic oil

with the GP just rolling over 130k last night, ive decided maybe its time to switch to synthetic. What kind do you guys recommend that doesnt cost like $10 a quart? Ive heard royal purple is good, but thats a little expensive for me.

that new mobil 1 is like $5/qt which is still pretty expensive but worth it....try that

im running Mobil 1 10w-30 full synthetic in my truck and car. They have the multiblend **** too, but in not sure on how great that stuff is.

NJSPEEDER 07-27-2005 05:44 PM

to be economical Mobil1 is the way to go. if you want better Royal Purple is good stuff.

just a quick question to throw in hear since where talking about oil, do you guys thing that penzoil 10 30w is good to break in my rebuilt 350?

skorpion317 07-27-2005 09:43 PM

matt, don't use the synthetic stuff. it's not a good idea for a high mileage engine, since the synthetic stuff is usually thinner than the regular oil. go with a high mileage protection formula, like Castrol GTX High Mileage or something similar.

That's what I hear, that after a while it's not good to switch to synthetic. I'm running GTX high milage myself.

I run Mobil1 15-50 in the Lumina - plenty of protection, and flows great down to -47 degrees F :)

FWIW - I made the switch to Mobil1 when the car had about 120k miles because I was taking it to school (one hour north of Pittsburg) and I knew the car would see some really low temperature out there. Synthetic flows much better than conventional when it's cold, so the Mobil1 provided much more protection on startup. Car has 183k miles on it now, and the motor still runs great.

Yup - new exhaust and new o2 = mostly happy Lumina.

Now it just needs a new front hub/wheel bearing. (along with paint, new interior, better engine/trans, etc).

I made the switch to Mobil 1 at 153K miles in my jeep and its not leaking. 8) the oil comes out cleaner too when I go to change my oil. Synthetic is just plain better.

Camaro2you, I dont think you'll have any problems breaking in an engine with that oil. Just remember to change it after the cam break in and then again after the first 500 miles. After the break in, you can switch to synthetic if you want to.

slasherbarb 07-28-2005 03:50 PM

i used castorl syntec 5w-30 for my last oil change...but i got the oil fo free... otherwise i would use mobil 1 10w30 for your car

Yup, chances are it is going to start burning off or leaking out the valve seals, there is no reason to use synthetic at all if you change your oil regularly. I don't even use it on my LS1.

nj85z28 07-31-2005 08:51 PM

just switched my GTP to synthetic 2 days ago, and it seems to run a lil better actually/
