Chevy Camaro Concept Slated for '06 Detroit Show, '09 Debut
Date Posted 08-04-2005

DETROIT — Chevrolet plans to take the wraps off a concept Camaro at the 2006 Detroit auto show in January.

Also, Inside Line has learned the automaker is evaluating proposals to revive the classic performance-car nameplate in 2009-2010 on a new low-cost rear-wheel-drive platform.

Among the scenarios under discussion inside General Motors is the development of a lower-cost version of the Sigma rear-drive platform that underpins the Cadillac CTS and STS sedans. Another proposal would take the new rear-drive platform that's being developed in Australia for the next-generation Holden Commodore sedan and spin off a low-cost variant for North America.

GM planners are said to have targeted several body styles for the Chevy and Pontiac brands on a new rear-drive platform, including a sport sedan, a sporty coupe and a convertible. The Camaro and GTO badges could be used on those vehicles, according to company sources.

Across town, Chrysler is said to be preparing a concept Dodge Challenger for the '06 Detroit show, to test the market for a proposed two-door performance car it wants to introduce around 2008-2009 as a potential competitor to the Ford Mustang.

ok, here's the ground rules, GM:

1. MUST HAVE A V8. no ifs, ands, or buts. the SS or Z28, whichever becomes the top model, must have the LS2. if it shares the CTS platform, the base model can use the 3.6L V6...255 HP and 252 ft./lbs. of torque should be more than enough to deal with the Mustang V6.

2. IT MUST BE A COUPE. no camaro sport sedans. it just won't work. I don't care what chrysler did with the Charger. The Camaro has to be a coupe, with a convertible option. and don't forget the T-Tops.

3. IT MUST HAVE A STANDARD MANUAL. none of this "pay extra for a 6-spd" ********. give us the manual standard, the way it's supposed to be.

4. IT MUST BE RWD. I swear to God, if anyone at GM brings up the subject of a FWD version, like they did before the 4th gens came out, i'm gonna go to the corporate HQ and strangle them.

I heard somewhere that if Chevy does bring the Camaro back, Pontiac will have a Trans Am and just that, no Firebird or Formula. But with all this back and forth each month with one magazine saying this and another saying that, I still don't know what to believe.

Batman 08-05-2005 12:00 PM

There won't be a Firebird unless the Camaro sells really well IMO. odss are the pontiac version will be the GTO.

j0n 08-05-2005 12:55 PM

**** concordes....id rather drive an L03 formula than a damn camaro

I recall reading an article about GM cutting back on models, not companies. As such, I wouldnt expect a Firebird line at Pontiac as long as the GTO remains. If the GTO gets canned AND the Camaro sells well enough to warrant some other type of sports coupe, then maybe Pontiac will get the nod. Somehow, with gas prices the way they are, and the possibility of the Camaro fulfilling GMs road into lower cost sports cars, I doubt Pontiac will get a chance - at least not anytime soon.

Having said that, and also recalling an article about realligning the mission of each company, I'm surprised Pontiac isn't the developer of the next Gm lower cost sports coupe - being the "Driving Excitement" division.

I've previously told the wife to get ready to trade her Trailblazer for the next Camaro. Actually, I really can't understand that after all the work of bringing the Monaro (GTO) over to the states (I think USA requires the 'safest' cars in the world), why on earth didn't Chevy slap on a new front and back end and call it the Chevelle? Makes sense to me, but wouldn't get it if it were this ugly...

Fasterthanyou 08-05-2005 05:02 PM

That chevelle concept was the most hideous thing ever proposed and shown off. I hope they crush that thing so no more ugly pictures can be taken.
As for camaro vs firebird, give me a break. The camaro always sold more so start with it first. Besides, it was never the firebird vs mustang! It's always been the camaro vs the mustang.
I can't wait for the camaro to come back. Having read the latest "muscle car" articles compare the GTO to the new Mustang it's a huge insult. It's like saying hey, we just gave up trying to compete with the mustang and here's our more expensive slower selling pontiac muscle car that has the same problem as the camaro before it got canned! Mistakes all over again.
They need to produce a new camaro and then intro the firebird when they drop the GTO. That way they'll have a lighter more able platform to kick Ford's ass on the track and off. None of this heavy comfy BS they're trying to sell for $$$ over what it's worth.
After the vette lost it's flip up headlights I think the same would happen to the birds so it's probably best they don't insult us and bring back the bird first. Just my opinion and no, I don't like camaro's over firebirds... it depends on the year/trim package.

Looks like crap!

Working the other side of the street...

Mopar {I refuse to use the "DAMNler-Chrysler name} is reported to be rolling out a new Challenger. It will be a 2 door, RWD model. Just like the Charger should have been! Maybe the success of the "retro" Mustang will get the pony car wars up and running again...
I dayum sure hope so! :!:

BigAls87Z28 08-06-2005 10:06 AM

Yeah...and will weigh a notch over 4k lbs like the rest of the LX cars.

And I belive I called this some time ago so...

Big Al > Edmunds.

And that 2009 prediction is a little long.

I thought manuals were cheaper than autos??

Brando56894 08-06-2005 02:37 PM

AFAIK they are. and i can see where theyre going with puttin out the camaro out first, then if that succeeds bring back the trans am! myself im between the cars, i forget who said it on here (sry) but it all depends on the look/trim package/etc. i like the gen 3 camaros better then the gen 3 firebird but i like the gen 4 firebirds alot better then the gen 4 camaros. cant wait to see the pics for it

Firebird67dude 08-06-2005 04:15 PM

if i remember correctly Pontiac didnt come out with the Trans Am until 1969. Chevy had the camaro from the start in 67 along with the Firebird but the trans am wasnt needed untilo 1969. The SS came b4 the Trans Am be cause the V8 Firebird was just as good as the "SS" but Pontiac didnt want to make chevy cry so they made the Trans Am which kicked ass. Either way A new camaro or TA would be awesome but i think it should be a mix between the 1st n 4th gens. Must be RWD and have a V8.
