Registration questions...
Ok, lets see if some of you guys with the collector/classic cars can help me out.
I want to get QQ Plates for the 72. I would just have to go up to DMV and as for a classic registration right? What kind of milage restriction do I have per year, if there is any? Are there any rules I have to follow with QQ? Does it have to be numbers matching? Is there a different route to go about doing this? I also have an 81 Bronco. I might wait till 06 to register the car, so by then it will be a Classic car, and I wont have to put up with the emissions stuff, which the Bronco does NOT have. I do have both the cats, but I dont feel like putting them in. |
QQ restriction is jsut 25 years old. you don't have to worry about emissions ever again, but i think they are still doing the basic safety inspection(horn, headlights, wipers, turn signals)
the mileage restriction seems to be faith based at DMV. last i heard it officialy was a 3000mile a year restriction, but no one i know who has QQ plates has ever had their mileage checked. the useage restrictions come from your insurance company. if you go with one of the good collector car insurance companies like haggerty you can usually get a policy without any major restrictions on your use of the vehicle. later tim |
QQ plates have no inspection and are supposed to be limited to 3000 miles a year I think. It's also a 3 year registration. But you have to take some decent pictures of the car and take them to Trenton to register it as a classic/antique to get the QQ plates. I think you can have them mail you a form as well so you might not have to go downtown. It's the collector's insurance that limits how/when you can drive the car. You can't drive the vehicle to work with collectors insurance. It limits you to parades, car clubs gatherings, occasional drives but is not supposed to be used as a drive to work vehicle or even as a backup. I think you'd be better off getting a normal registration and plates but you'll have to get it tuned up well enough to pass inspection. I was able to get a pretty radical 396 to pass emissions in my old 68 SS396 Camaro convertible so it can be done.

form what jeff is saying a regular registration makes more sense.
besides, it isn't like it can be too hard to get a pre-emissions vehicle through. if DMV won't take it for one little thing or another you can always just go to the place derek got his car "inspected". lol later tim |

im goin with haggerty and classic registration 20something for the sticker saying exzempt and 300 a year for insurance. 8)

cmaaro2you, good luck getting insurance on taht car...... i have went through every freaking place possible, youre gonna run into **** saying that car is too new, etc.

I would much rather do QQ plates and only have to register it every 3 years then do it every year and go to inspection for something that doesnt have anything to inspect? Especialy after I put LT headers and dual exhaust.

Well, i guess its up to either QQ's or regular registration. I want to drive it more then the 3k miles. I dunno, but I want to do it soon.

get regular registration.
the car predates any emissions equipment so as long as you take care of teh safety aspect of things you will get through inspection easy. my only suggestion is to get an agreed value insurance policy. this means that should you have an accident of any sort the insurance company will base how much they will spend on repairs on a value that you negotiate instead of just giving you a blank book value that is likely far less than you could sell the car for or what it would cost to repair even minor damage. some agreed value policies do have mileage restrictions, but they too are normally negotiable. later tim |

nonono, how come no one knows this? nj has qq for classics and seperate registration for COLLECTOR cars. i had this on my GTO and it was great. i went through all this so let me lay it out for you guys. with qq plates you get 3000 miles a year and i believe a basic safety inspection every 2 years. you CANNOT drive a qq plated car anywhere besides to and from: a repair shop, car show, parade and things of that nature. if a local cop notices you driving it for no reason you can get it revoked and fined. now, if you plan on wanting to drive the car whenever you want and you want to classify for classic insurance through haggerty or wherever and you do not want an inspection then get the collector car insurance. go to the dmv and ask for it, you have to fill out a form and mail it to trenton and then they will send you the registration in the mail. you receive regular plates from the dmv, no different then your normal car. when you get the registration in the mail then go to the inspection station. they will look at your odometer and tell you to drive a mile around the block 1 mile to make sure it works. when you come back they look at it again, write the mileage down and give you a triangular sticker for the window good for 2 years. thats it, you get 3000 miles a year, although when i was with haggerty i only got 2500 so i had to keep it under that. you can drive the car anywhere you want. simple, done. **** the qq's and dont even think about regular registration or you have to pass inspection standards for that year. with collector you can pretty much have a blower sticking out of the hood by three feet and a parachute on the back with wheelie bars and they dont care. go with collector

I had collector on my 87, and I know of several people that have it on there cars. Problem is...I dont want to be tied down by a milage limit. From a man who does 22-24k miles a year, being tied down to 3k...aint gunna cut it.
