Rising to the Challenger: Detroit auto show debut for Dodge muscle coupe concept
BOB GRITZINGER

To all those purists who still can’t forgive Dodge for building a four-door Charger, here’s your answer: the 2006 Dodge Challenger concept. The Dodge boys released a sketch of the car to the world, but we obtained these exclusive spy photos of the car, which will premiere at the North American International Auto Show in January in Detroit.

Challenger draws on the 1970 model as the icon of the series, says Tom Tremont of Chrysler’s Pacifica studio in California. But instead of merely recreating that car, designers tried to build the Challenger most people see in their mind’s eye, without imperfections like the tucked under wheels and long front overhang of the old car. At the same time, the concept incorporates distinctive Challenger cues like the rear fender kick, wide mouth front end, functional hood scoops and rectangular exhaust tips.

Built on a shortened Chrysler 300/Dodge Charger chassis (116-inch wheelbase vs. 120 inches), the Challenger gets a 6.1-liter Hemi hooked to a six-speed manual transmission with a pistol grip shifter.

All that’s left to ponder is “will they build it?” With all the hardware in place and a primed marketplace, we can’t see why Dodge wouldn’t rise to this challenge.

foff667 11-21-2005 09:02 AM

i like it...i say bring back the 1st gen camaro styling and it will go over very well if done right :D

NJSPEEDER 11-21-2005 09:38 AM

looks good. nice to see someone has finaly figured out that a "retro" muscle car shoudl have old style big shouldered looks.
only thing i hope is that they don't tart it up with power everything and make it into a 4200lbs slug like they did the charger, GTO, and 300M

coldkilla 11-21-2005 09:43 AM

wow thats sharp but i think its a little too retro to actually see production. the real version would probably be more up to date. that one in the pic pretty much looks exactly like a challenger with minor updates.

BobonaStick 11-21-2005 09:48 AM

I'd say that they finally got the idea of "retro" Sad to say that their idea of a new Charger is completely an ugly duckling... belongs in the trash can.

Why? To pretend it's a Charger?

LS1Hawk 11-21-2005 03:28 PM

Damn...that may just be my next car if they build them.

BigAls87Z28 11-21-2005 04:48 PM

Wow, I really didnt think that you all would like it.
I think its the ugliest car Chrysler has made yet.
Look slike they took the grill right off a 70' Challenger, the B pillar is way too big and awkward looking, and the whole front end looks hacked up and slimmed down compard to the fat ass of the back.
Downright ugly if you ask me. And news is that they will make a very limited production, under 20k of these cars, so dont expect one to be in the Mustang price range.
Looks like it has a chrome drip rail around the windows too.
And it will be built on a small LX chassis, so expect this puppy to tip the scales at over 3800 lbs.
This car is almost exactly how I pictured it, nearly an exact replica skin slid over the top of an LX chassis.
Ill wait till Detroit.

GORGEOUS!

jola 11-22-2005 11:04 PM

the front end doesn't look very mean. it kinda reminds me of a big puppy. the rear end looks hot though.

quit hatin! we bitch when there are no rear wheel drive high horsepower vehicles available and we bitch when they finally come out and we dont like the grill/seatbelts/glovebox/price. all i know is that im pretty damn happy we have the choices that we do cuz i remember a time not too long ago when there were only three potent high horsepower rwd cars available for about, oh i dont know, 20 years or so. if ya dont like it then get a design engineering degree and go work for them and make your own. i like whiskey bombs.

Oddball 11-25-2005 03:33 PM

Nice. If I were in the market for a newer 2-door car I'd look at it. Unfortunatley the kiddies force me into a 4-door with a large back seat.
