Why Neutral is important
http://www.mbcomps.com/gallery/album...winneutral.jpg
A customer had his SportTrack towed into our shop this morning. He was towing his SportTrack behind his Motorhome "Coach" for about 50 miles before he noticed a problem. There appeared to be a lot of sparks coming from his SportTrack. There was only one small problem, when he got his SportTrack all setup behind the motorhome he forgot to take the trans out of park. Yep he had been towing it for the last 50 miles in park. The tires were gone and the rims were half gone, must of also wore down part of the axle housing to because it was leaking. Don't know how the trans is yet. |
thats hilarious!

oh and according to michign jeepers "This picture and text was posted to a message board 11-28-05 by a dealer in Reno, NV."
|
haha, no matter where it happened or when(NJ or a dealer in NV), its funny as hell. well thats the cheap way to lower your vehicle, lol. And you think someone on the road with him would have warned him.
As for repiars, trans should be fine, and axle housing better be leaking, hell it should be empty, with being that low to the axle centerline the rear must be almost 1/3 gone too. the leaf spring was damaged even, lol. too bad the gas tank wasnt low enough to scrape, that would of been cool once that wore though.. BOOM **EDIT** looking at it again...it doesnt really seem like it did that damage from being dragged.towed. i may be wrong but if i dragged a truck 50 miles enough to do that, dont you think there would be some type of burn from sparks or debris on the rim itself or the 1/4 panel behind the tire. it is all perfectly clean, and how does he have the leaf spring parts? they should have been lost along the road. From my experience, i'd say that vehicle spun out of control, hit a curb or something and shattered the wheel and also pulled the tire off at the same time. But thats just my educated guess... looks like pic thatll just circulate the message boards and the story will change everytime a tiny bit... |
yea, plus the trans would not have been able to keep the wheels lockedat travel speeds. I'm sure we've all had the experiance whether in our car or not where we hve a slip of the mind and toss it in park while its still rolling and hear "click click click"... if it cant hold at a roll no way it can hold at travel speeds.
|
Maybe they had the E-brake on?
|
Oh and too bad it wasnt a magnesium wheel...that would have been one melted ford!
|
even still i dont think the e-brake could hold the wheel even if its being towed at 25-30 mph
