Detroit: What a Trip!!

1450 Miles
250 Camaro Enthusiasts from 28 States
7 beers with enthuisats and GM personel
4 states
1 speeding ticket
1 Camaro

My friends, I have seen the future, and it is awesome. The Camaro Concept is an amzing in person. I have only seen ONE picture that captures the car right, and itsnot on line. The car does have retro flare, as can be seen in the grill and greenhouse, but to be honest, its the lightest dose of retro I have seen out of the 3 pony cars. The rear of the car is very agressive, and reminds me of the angles that a CTS has. The tail lights, IMO, should be circular like the early 2nd gens, and to better line up with the Corvette and Cobalt coupes. The stance, wheel base, overhangs, hight, length, everything was spot on to what I expected out of Camaro. I have the specs of the concept here...

Wheel base is 110.5in
length is 186.2in
width 79.6in
hight 53in
track f/r 63.8/63.3
Wheel wheel indi suspension, MCP Strut/Multilink rear, progressive springs, gas pressured dampers
4 wheel disk, 14in rotors with 4 piston calipers
21/22in wheels with 275/30-21 and 305/30-22 tires.

The Hertiage Center was also awesome. They had the last 2 production Camaro and Firebird vets there, both in red, still with the plastic wrap around the seats. They had vintage Olds, Buick, Caddy, Pontiac, Chevy, and the very first Saturn SL to roll off the Spring Hill plant. They had race cars like the C5-R, CTS-VR, and the Caddy LMP2 car. They had famous engines line up, including a double rotary engine from WWII warplanes. They also had the famous ZL1 427 all aluminum engine, incased in glass. They had the Firebird I, II, and III. cars, the Buick Y Job and the Buick LeSaber concepts designed by Harley Earl himself. They had every memorable car for the past 100 years of GM, and they all had the keys in the ignition!! Some other notable cars were the 1969 Trans Am, 1967 and 69 Pace Cars, 1982 Pace Car, 1984 Firebird TA 15th Anni model, and a 1999 TA 30th Anni next to eachother. 1964 GTO, and the list goes on and on and on and on. Its very rare to have that many non-GM members inside the center, and its something that I will always remember.
This car is deffinatly a hit. Everyone was aroudn this car. Challenger and Mustang GT500...could have heard a pin drop.
Id like to thank everyone over at GM/Chevy that made it possible, including Scott S. I enjoyed talking to GM engineers and marketing people.

And also, the other cars that showed there face at Detroit from GM were also amazing. Two Mode Hyrbid Tahoe, which would trump Toyotas single mode, is being released within 12 months. They expect 25-30% increase over the Tahoes already class leading fuel economy.
But by far the most amazing thing i saw, outside of the Camaro, didnt have a bow tie on it (but they did have a Z06 to sit in..mmm yeah), it didnt have an Arrowhead, A Crest, or a Planet for a symbol, but 3 Silver Shields...its the all new Buick Enclave.

Sounds like a really great time. Can't wait till the Camaro is on the East Coast so I can see it for myself.

what state did you get the speeding ticket in? if it was Michigan, points do not transfer at all, they are one of those states that dont conform with the 45 or so others. i'll be driving to Detroit Sunday. :-D

BigAls87Z28 01-11-2006 08:09 AM

Ohio.

BigAls87Z28 01-11-2006 08:23 AM

Thanks for the writeup man. I truly hope the pictures dont do any justice to the Camaro.

not a compact state, huh? well, they'd only transfer 2 points anyway for the moving violation, but that's two less points that you didn't need in the first place. but... i think ohio is part of the compact so you might be seeing those two points afterall. do you have a mandatory court appearance, or can you just send it in with payment?

somehow i knew the pictures wouldn't do the concept justice. i love it and cannot wait to see it in person. if they have it at both NY and philly, i may even see it twice...

V 01-11-2006 02:09 PM

i cant wait to see it in person on monday, i also love how they gave the engine soom room unlike the 4th gens, working on a motor 1/2 way under the dask isnt too much fun.

So, did they say anything about "Z28" or "SS" ?? Or is it just gonna be like the GTO with 1 base model?
